Advantages: Very amusing, some of the people realy do believe in their ideas which makes it even funnier

Disadvantages: Some of the most stupid ideas go through at the whim of the celrebrity guest

Dave Gorman is a comedian who has been around for a while on the peripherary of mainstream television, gathering together a cult of loyal fans. (would it be wrong of me to suggest that many of them might be students?) Genius is his perhaps his highest profile show yet following on the footsteps of Googlewhack and Are You Dave Gorman? which attempted to locate other people across the globe who shared his name.

Like the illegitimate child of Dragons Den, Genius attempts to highlight the brilliant, whacky and often plain daft ideas of potential entrepaneurs who otherwise might get laughed off of any other more serious show. There is no prize for taking part, no large sums of money involved only the respect or honour that is rightly given or taken away when Gorman, along with a celebrity guest who changes every show, decide if contenders are "genius" or "not genius!"

Each contender is given a chance to explain their idea and, in some cases, the BBC soecial effects department has a go at putting togrether a prototype. Novelty ideas already seen include a man who wanted to introduce shoes with weighing scales attached, a man who wanted to see a democratic bus where the destination was decided by the whims of it's passengers (majority rules folks!) and one fellow who suggested rounding off the Isle Of Wight's coast to make it a more symmetrical shape!

There is also a sin bin which Gorman and guest delve into which is basically a repository where ideas are filed that are too stupid to be put on the show. All ideas come from E-mails sent in by members of the British Public and whilst some are obviously only sent in for comedic purposes, you also get the sense that some of the contenders truly believe in their ideas and suggestions!

Celebrity guests so far have included Jonathon Pryce and Catherine Tate with other big names planned for the remainder of the series. The show goes out on BBC1 at 9 P.M every Friday. It's certainly different, very, very amusing and defenitely worth a watch. And if you think you could do better, why not send in an idea yourself? Go on....... I dare you!

Summary: An alternative to the takes-itself-too-seriously Dragon's Den

The show was actually filmed last autumn, October if I remember correctly. It wasn't as funny live as it was when cut together to make it 30 minutes short
