Advantages: Gives a worldview which we lack in Britain.
Disadvantages: For some, Galloway.
This programme has the worst, and by extension, seemingly the longest introduction in the world, and as you know I am exaggerating. I happened upon this on-line TV program off the back of George Galloway's Talksport radio programme - this happened to be mentioned on his Talksport radio show.
As I quite enjoy Mr Galloway's phone-in radio show, I thought I would check this out. I understand the show is broadcast on Sky on Thursdays, though I am unsure of the broadcast time - I listened on the on-line archive. It is not unlike the radio show except that the action, so to speak, is televised. The show picks up on the topics of the day.
The majority of callers, texters and emailers are not from within the UK - there is probably a good reason for this and this will really rub up some people the wrong way! Despite being broadcast from central London (naturally!!), PressTV is funded by the Iranian government. George Galloway does make it very clear at the beginning of each show that the views expressed by himself are his own: He says:
"I don't speak for PressTV, I don't speak for the government of Iran, and neither of those speaks for me, but I do tell you exactly what I think"
Most of the topics involve world politics, particularly the Middle East, Palestine, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the West's relationship with areas of the world such as these. It would be easy to watch this programme and dismiss it, as Galloway is seen as something of a Saddam etc etc lover.
Whichever way you think about it and Galloway, the programme is valuable for learning something about the wider world view - more so because it involves discussion, rather than being told what to think by the one way traffic that is the mainstream news on the mainstream channels, and the mainstream papers (including the Guardian!)
This program probably won't appeal to a certain 'average' white, conservative (small c), British, (nominally) christian (small c). It may be seen as very un-British - just as many see Galloway due to his interest in the Middle East.
It may be worth those with that view to to consider the Oxford or Cambridge don, who may be a historian of the middle east. Does this make him or her un-British? Does this make his or her interest in the Middle East legitimate because historically Oxbridge academics have been born into the 'establishment'?
Even though there are many out there that might think how dare 'they' have an opinion and pollute Britain's airwaves, this programme is an insight, and should be given a chance.
I think George Galloway is wasted in British politics. If he spent less time on issues outwith Britain and concentrated on things at home, Britain would be a better place. He is one of the fairer politicians out there, and it would seem he is one of the few without their 'snouts in the trough'.
I hear the post of Speaker of the House is up for grabs!

Summary: An eye opener.
