George & MildredNewest Review: ... hilarious (!) (or hilariously predictable to be more exact) results. They all live in the house owned by the Ropers, played splendidly by Yootha Joyce and Brian Murphy. After two or three successful series, the Ropers earned a spin off series in their own right and did quite well out on their own, with the Fourmile family next door becoming the new stooges, the strait laced straight men who suffered the anguish of living next door to the ropers. MILDRED ... the oddest of odd names ... MILL DREAD ... MILD RED ... MILDEW HEAD ... all sorts of unpleasant connotations with this name, and always ones which shake you silly ... they must have spent ages trying to get that one right, and they certainly managed it ... Then we had GEORGE as the partner's name, one of the ultimate, old fashioned, middle aged man's name ... perfectly formed and endlessly dumb, just one little letter away from gorge, indicating the voracious desire for sating ...

INTRO Growing up in the 1970s, I have a lot of affection for the sitcoms from this decade. Thankfully, Granada Plus often show episodes of George and Mildred, Terry and June, Man About The House and other gems - so keep an eye out. Man About The House was shown from 1973 to 1976, featuring George and Mildred Roper as the landlords of a house which has been made into flats. The series ended in April 1976, but the spin-off sitcom George and Mildred began that September, just five months later. This continued to follow the lives of the couple, who had now moved to Middlesex and lived next door to the Fourmiles. SERIES / EPISODES / ...

George and Mildred has to be one of the best ever comedies, and to this day I still regularly enjoy the repeated episodes on (where else?) UK Gold… A great blend of characters, from Poor old Common husband and Wife George and Mildred, upto the snobby neighbours and the rest of the disapproving community, everything about this program screams the word “Funny!” The humour is non-stop and very varied, with all actors and actresses playing an equally impressive role – there is not one weak member of the cast, as they all carry their role incredibly well to make this a very very good comedy that deserved far more media attention and even ...
