George & Mildred

Newest Review: ... hilarious (!) (or hilariously predictable to be more exact) results. They all live in the house owned by the Ropers, played splendidly by Yootha Joyce and Brian Murphy. After two or three successful series, the Ropers earned a spin off series in their own right and did quite well out on their own, with the Fourmile family next door becoming the new stooges, the strait laced straight men who suffered the anguish of living next door to the ropers. Now genuinely, there isn't a great deal more to George An... more

MILDRED ... the oddest of odd names ... MILL DREAD ... MILD RED ... MILDEW HEAD ... all sorts of unpleasant connotations with this name, and always ones which shake you silly ... they must have spent ages trying to get that one right, and they certainly managed it ... Then we had GEORGE as the partner's name, one of the ultimate, old fashioned, middle aged man's name ... perfectly formed and endlessly dumb, just one little letter away from gorge, indicating the voracious desire for sating ...  Read the complete review

INTRO Growing up in the 1970s, I have a lot of affection for the sitcoms from this decade. Thankfully, Granada Plus often show episodes of George and Mildred, Terry and June, Man About The House and other gems - so keep an eye out. Man About The House was shown from 1973 to 1976, featuring George and Mildred Roper as the landlords of a house which has been made into flats. The series ended in April 1976, but the spin-off sitcom George and Mildred began that September, just five months later. This continued to follow the lives of the couple, who had now moved to Middlesex and lived next door to the Fourmiles. SERIES / EPISODES / ...  Read the complete review

George and Mildred has to be one of the best ever comedies, and to this day I still regularly enjoy the repeated episodes on (where else?) UK Gold… A great blend of characters, from Poor old Common husband and Wife George and Mildred, upto the snobby neighbours and the rest of the disapproving community, everything about this program screams the word “Funny!” The humour is non-stop and very varied, with all actors and actresses playing an equally impressive role – there is not one weak member of the cast, as they all carry their role incredibly well to make this a very very good comedy that deserved far more media attention and even ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review George & Mildred (145 words)

George & Mildred is one of the most fondly remembered of ITV's comedy. ITV don't make comedy as good as this anymore, mind you comedy isn't there strong point nowadays. It starred Yootha Joyce as the housewife with aspirations and her slighlty henpecked husband Brian Murphy. He was one of lifes loosers, not much went right for him. Trying to have a quite time he muddled through life keeping his head down. Their posh neighbours the Fourmiles looked down on them, at least the husband Jeffrey did. His character definitely summed up the stereotyped estate agent, ideas of grandeur in his own self importance. He hated having the Ropers next door ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review George & Mildred: Compulosry showing for marriage counselling (169 words)

Poor George, the hapless husband to Mildred. No matter what he does he never ever gets it right, and on top of that Mildred would like to have you know what. George is a very nervous individual who personifies all that was a British husband. Undemanding and happy at home. Sex was never to be mentioned and intimacy was an alien concept. Mildred was the one who ruled the roost,as was the reality of most homes. Nothing negative meant here. Women spent their time here and kept it and all in order. She also was the one who had the sexual desires - which is a role reversal which got great laughs. They had their neighbours who had a son who provided ...  Read the complete review
