***What is it?***
An American drama series which focuses on two ladies- called the Gilmore Girls- a mother and daughter, who live in a small town called Stars Hollow.
The duo are played by Lauren Graham as Loreli Gilmore, and Alexis Bledel, as Rory Gilmore.
The series made its debut on American television in October 2000, and ended in May 2007 after seven series. Its still shown on E4 for us UK viewers.
Although the premise sounds completely boring- a mother and daughter duo who have issues with Loreli's parents, live in a sleepy town and live normal lives...but for some reason this concept really works!
Loreli's relationship with her parents is quite difficult as she ran away to live in Stars Hollow, having become pregnant at 16 and refusing to marry Christopher, which is what her parents wanted. Thanks to Rory, Loreli's parents become a bigger part in their lives when they start funding Rory's education at an expensive preparatory school called Chilton.
Lauren Graham plays Loreli Gilmore . Her parents are Richard and Emily Gilmore, very rich people of high status. After Loreli moves out of her parent's house the show then focuses on her trying to make it on her own with her child.
Alexis Bledel plays Rory Gilmore (starred recently in the film Sin City). Born to Loreli and Christopher, she and her mother have a great relationship and are more like sisters or friends than mother and daughter. Their unusually close relationship is what most people like the most about this show.
Scott Patterson plays Luke Danes. He's the diner owner that Rory and Loreli frequent and supplies them with endless cups of coffee which they are addicted to. When I say addicted, I mean SERIOUSLY addicted- maybe it explains their hyper conversation! After 7 series Alex Bledel became so fed up of drinking coffee that the producers had to use coke to make it look like coffee!
Kelly Bishop plays Emily Gilmore. Loreli's Mother and Rory's Grandmother, she played baby's mother in the film Dirty Dancing.
Edward Herrmann plays Richard Gilmore. Emily's husband and father and grandfather of Loreli and Rory.
Keiko Agena plays Lane Kim, Rory's best friend.
Yanic Truesdale plays hilarious character Michel Gerard. An eccentric French employee at the Independence Inn (where Loreli originally worked)..
Melissa McCarthy plays Sookie St. James, Loreli's best friend and co-owner of the Inn that Loreli runs in later series, as well as the Chef.
This show is different to other shows because of, amongst other things, the incredibly fast dialogue. Every conversation is filled with witty puns and such a speedy delivery of information that if you stop listening for a second you'll have missed half the action.
The storylines involve love, action, dramatic tension, positive relationship between mother and daughter (Loreli and Rory) and a heart-breaking relationship between mother and daughter (Loreli and Emily).
There is social commentary (as the show focuses on a pregnant 16 year old whose parents disapprove of her) but who raises a very successful daughter, basically on her own).
The show is addictive! It's funny and dramatic and you just have to watch episode after episode to see what happens next! There's something for everyone as the lives of the young Rory and older Loreli are explored. I love it and watched nearly every episode. Sometime sit was unrealistic, such as the way Rory's life is a little too perfect and she gets everything she wants every time, but other than that it's a very watchable and entertaining show.
Its also a feel-good nice show- no gritty storylines, no murder or other harsh issues are dealt with- just a fun family show!
Look out for Sookie who is hilarious- especially the episode where she rips her work tunic and explains what happened...
Summary: Addictive tv
