Advantages: the format is superb, Jasper Carrott as the host
Disadvantages: the ad breaks ruin the drama a bit
'Golden Balls' is a relitavely new gameshow to hit our screens and it has been a huge success so far, drawing many viewers and competing against shows like the 'Weakest Link.' Hosted by funnyman Jasper Carrott, the show sees four contestants competing against one another for an everchanging sum of money. The show begins with the money bank, a bank of balls containing cash amounts ranging from £10 to £75,000. Twelve balls are then drawn at random from the money bank and four killer balls added too. The sixteen balls are then distributed equally to the four contestants, either being positioned on the front or back rows. The front rows balls are visible to the other contestants (the amounts can be seen), while the back rows remain a secret to the contestants. They then have to try and convince each other that they don't have the killers and the values on the back rows are large; all because it is the money which they take through with them that they are ultimately playing for, quite complicated really! So, the first round ends by a contrestant being voted outby the otghers, normally because they don't believe what they are saying or because the cash amounts are too small and they have killer balls.
In round two the process is repeated in a similar fashion. The remaining balls are put back into the machine and an extra killer ball added. The balls are then divided once again between the contestants, two balls on the front row and three on the back (meaning that now there are less balls visible meaning they have to blag it to their competitiors more). The voting process then takes place again and another contestant is eliminated. It can be quite funny at this point sometimes because obviously the two remaining contestants are now in a position to win money so the eliminated person is not very happy, a few leaving remarks are usually made as the elimnated person scuttles off set! Haha! Now the balls are once more put back into the machine and another killer ball is added. The next round sees the contestants have to work togerther for the first time. They have to pick a ball in turn and decide wether it is a ball to 'win' or a ball to 'bin'. For example if they choose to 'win' they keep the amount, if they 'bin' it then it is thrown out. The big downside here is that each killer ball takes a 0 of of their cash total, eg £1000 becomes £100, quite cruel. This does make things heated especially if somebody choose to win a killer yet throws out a £20,000 ball!
The final round decides what, if any money they take home. Each player has to decide wether to 'split' the money or 'steal' it; it's not that imple though. If they both decide to share then the money is literally divided equally between the two of them. If one splits and one steals then the contestant who steals it takes it all! If they both opt to steal then they leave with absolutely nothing. I think this is a fantastic end to the show and makes great television. You should see their faces when somebody steals all the money when they had agreed to split, or when they agree to share and yet they both steal and end up with nothing, priceless!
Overall, it's one of the best gameshows on television for me. Jasper Carrott does a fantastic job as the host and the format is so good. Well worth watching.
Summary: well worth checking out

- 30/03/09 A very good explanation of this mental show- it's taken me about a year to finally understand what's meant to be going on!
Mainly I watch it to entertain myself with how Jasper Carrotts gets 'Golden Ball' innuendo in! :P |

- 03/03/09 Good review but I hate this show. I used to love Jasper - but in this he just irritates me and those awful people who steal and get away with it - can't believe there are such horrors around - maybe I should get out more! |

- 02/03/09 I've only ever caught this part way through so I've never fully understood it. It makes sense now! |
