Advantages: Novelty, quirky, greedy players
Disadvantages: Boring and repetitive
I'm home quite a bit with my little girl and by 4 oclock i'm in need of some normal conversastion (I love my little girl but baby babble gets to me) so this is usually when the TV goes on. This is where i discovered Golden Balls and at first i loved it but the novelty has now totally gone.
~~So what is it?~~
It's a game show on ITV hosted by Jasper Carrot where the aim of the game is to keep the cash and ditch the killers. There are 4 contestants who each get 4 golden balls. There are 12 cash balls and 4 killers in amongst this and their first aim is to find out where the 4 killers are. Only two of each players balls are revealed so you have to guess who is telling the truth and who is lying their pants off! They then vote and the person with the most votes leaves the game. The remaining three contestants get 5 balls each and only two are revealed to the other players. An extra killer has been added and the players again have to work out who has the killers. A second person will be voted out and it is at this stage they are stuck with the balls they have taken through and worse still, an extra killer is added to the game.
The two contestants then take it in turns to pick first a ball to bin, then a ball to win and the five balls to win is the sum of money they have to split or steal. Each killer takes a 0 off the end of their score so they need to aim to bin the killers. Each player then picks a golden ball that has either split or steal on it and depending on what they pick, depends if they receive any money.
~~ My Opinion ~~
Golden Balls isn't your usual game show and I actually found it quite interesting when I started watching it. Jasper Carrot is always trying to give the contestants useful reminders but most of them are too focused on messing up to listen to him! He adds in his own little quirky moments so it's always an amusing show. There's nothing worse than having what could be a good game show with a stiff little host.
The game itself is very original in that killers are just that - they kill the total of your cash and could leave you with as little as 50p to take home! The fact that the players get to interact and argue with each other when they try to persuade someone else they have no killers is just an added bonus in my opinion. The players get caught up in arguing and thus don't always see the bigger picture. Some of the bare faced lies they come up with is hilarious and it's even funnier when the contestants can't remember the value of money they said and change it without anyone having a clue.
The thing that lets the side down for me is that i've always been good as guessing when someone is lying and more often than not I can tell you where the killers are and who will split or steal. This kind of ruins the entire show for me as i've usually guessed this from the off and my partner no longer lets me watch it in the same room as him!
The novelty of the show didn't last very long either. It's on every weekday for an hour at a time and I found myself tiring of it after a couple of weeks. This was the case with deal or no deal too as I found there wasn't really anything new or interesting happening and every episode kind of resembled another.
Splitting or stealing is probably the best part of the show but as I said above, I can usually guess who will do what and therefore there is no surprise left for me! It is a good idea and it's always nice to see both players steal and be left with nothing.
~~ My Verdict ~~
Watch it occasionally and you'll probably enjoy it but I wouldn't recommend it as an everyday thing. I actually can't stand watching it anymore because I bored myself of it.
Summary: An occasional watch is fine but I wouldn't recommend it everyday.
