Advantages: Fun gameshow, any age can watch, shows how greedy some people are!
Disadvantages: Sometimes people who seem lovely lose out!
Goldenballs is currently shown on Channel 3 at 4PM on weekdays and is presented by Jasper Carrott.
The concept of the show is relatively simple, does greed pay? Here I will attempt to explain how the game is played.
We have golden balls which have cash amounts from £10 to £100,000 and killers which will reduce any money already earnt in the final round by 90% (it will knock a 0 off the end of the total amount they've accumulated).
In the first round there are four players who each will receive 4 balls. Out of the 16 balls handed out there will be 12 golden balls (cash) and 4 killer balls (90% reduction in final around). The players will have two balls on their front row and two balls on their back row. The balls on the front row will be revealed for everybody to see and then each player will have their turn to try and convince the other players what is on their back row as these are kept hidden until after the round is over. There are quite often arguments and people will gang up on each other to try and get that person out of the game. Then each person will cast one vote based on what they have seen on the front row and who they believe about the back row (there is normally always somebody lying!). Once the votes are cast one person will be out of the competition, however, if there is a tie then the two people not voted for will have to discuss it and decide between them who they want to go. Once the loser has been told they will then reveal the balls on their back row to everybody and we will find out if they were losing or not. Their balls are then eliminated from the competition and "binned" by being thrown down a shoot.
The balls from the 3 remaining players are recollected and added back in to a large ball sorting machine, 2 more cash balls and a killer ball will be added giving them 15 golden balls again. These are then divided up three to each player. The round begins like that last round except this time there are three balls left on the back row and not revealed until the end of the round. More rows generally ensue and as most of the balls in play are from the last round it should be relatively easy to suss out any liars if people just used a little brain power! Sometimes two or more people will try and claim the same ball (there are duplicates of some figures in the goldenballs machine) and then they will both be adamant that they have the ball in question and will try and convince the third person. More voting then takes place and the loser of this round has to bin their balls.
The balls are then collected up one final time, one more killer is added to the 10 goldenballs in play and the two finalists will be moved to a slightly different game area. There is a grid which holds all 11 goldenballs and each player will have a turn to bin a ball or win a ball (not optional it's alternated per ball) and the aim here is to bin any remaining killers and to win any large cash amounts. The chosen win balls are placed on 5 stands and the total will be added up as each amount is added to it. However, if a killer is chosen then the total will lose a 0 and drop by 90% so £100,000 will become £10,000 and £10,000 will become £1,000 etc.
Once this round is played and they have a final figure the two players are each presented with two balls. One with split and one with steal, they then look to see which is which and make their choice the whole time trying to convince each other to split and saying that they will both split. Once these balls are reveal if two split balls are chosen they will split, if one person steals they will take the full amount of money and if they both steal then they both go away with nothing. I think the largest amount of money I have seen stolen is £50,000 roughly. I felt really gutted for the contestant who lost!
Overall I think the concept of this gameshow is fantastic and no two games are ever the same. There are a wide variety of contestants on each game and unfortunately sometimes being greedy pays!
If I were to go on the show I would probably try to convince the other player that I would split and then I would steal the money (or try to at least!).
Jasper Carrott does a fantastic job of presenting the show as he brings some comedy to the proceedings although a lot of the lines he says just feel very staged!
I would definitely recommend watching this show, the reactions of people are just fantastic and it's great late afternoon viewing, therefore I will rate it 5/5.
Summary: I would definitely say yes to watching this gameshow!
