Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: None!
The good life is one of those programs that remind me of my childhood, my mum let me stay up until 7.30 on a Sunday night, just so I could watch this wonderful program.
Starring the beautiful Felicity Kendall and charismatic Richard Briers, it captivated me from the second it started until the moment it ended.
The synopsis of the show is Tom and Barbara Good, a middle class couple decide to drop out of the so-called "rat race", Tom leaves his well paid job as draughtsman, and decide to become self sufficient. This entails them turning there once beautiful home in suburbia into a small holding, complete with Pinky and Perky the pigs, a coup full of chickens, the front and back garden full of home grown vegetables and of course Geraldine the goat, who seems to really enjoy butting Toms bum!!
The episodes centre around the ever imaginative ways Tom and Barbara come up with to supplement their way of life, from paying the local newsagent for Toms weekly edition of Pig farmer magazine with eggs to making their own goats cheese,(courtesy of Geraldine!), by straining the goats milk through Barbara's old tights!!
The story is complimented by the Good's long suffering snobby neighbours Margo and Jerry, who think its an abomination to have such things happening in suburbia! ( well Margo is bothered more, Jerry just does as he is told!)
I never tire of watching these, and luckily for me neither does my mum, who has just purchased the entire collection on dvd, which I am currently working my way through.
I have to say though, for anyone who is familiar with the series, my favourite must be the Christmas edition.
Margo and Jerry order everything from Fortnum and Masons, from the tree down to the mince pies, and one Christmas the orders are mixed up and they receive none of their stuff, causing Margo to officially cancel Christmas. Tom and Barbara, feeling sorry for their best friends and decide to invite them round for Christmas day. What follows is one of the most enjoyable episodes ever, you witness the age old myth that Christmas is what you make of it, who you choose to spend it with and not, surprisingly, what you buy and how much it costs!!
Just the sight of Margo wearing a homemade "newspaper Christmas" hat from a homemade cracker and tiddly on pea pod wine is a true joy, one to watch for sure!!
Many thanks for reading this nostalgic rubbish!
Summary: One of the best series ever!
