Advantages: very very funny
Disadvantages: a few characters are past their best
The concept of introducing Asian comedy to a wider audience is a stroke of genius. Not only is it hugely entertaining, but hopefully would help reduce racism. There are many excellent recurring characters in this programme but you have to watch a few episodes to get into the swing of things. The man who thinks everything is Indian is brilliant with some very clever scripting. The two mothers discussing their sons are also a highlight. The way they turn tables with English people is also superb. The best scene of all time, in my opinion, is the one where a group of Indians go for "an English", order "bland food" and "twenty four plates of chips". Then they insult the waiter by calling him "a bit pasty looking". Those who haven't seen it may think this sounds racist-both to Asians and English people. But it isn't. The observational humour is excellent and it is done in such good taste that no-one could accuse them of racism (not least because the regulars on the programme consist of mainly Asians, but also white people). The only criticism is that some of the characters have gone past their best now, especially Smeeta Smitten Showbiz kitten and the two youths who order everyone to "eat my chuddies". On the whole, however, the programme is absolutely hilarious and a must for everyone.

- 09/02/01 i love that sketch, it is so funny, when they call the waiter their "mate" and they order all sorts of food... "we can always mix it together - I think you're supposed to do that actually" (chips, steak & kidney pie and mash) |
