Advantages: Fantastic Supporting Cast, Fantastic Show
Disadvantages: Two bad actors, they just happen to be the lead characters however.
I have in the past gone into great detail about TV Shows however in hindsight I've realised, to be honest; you don't need that amount of detail to want to watch the show. This is a summarised version of what I used to write for television shows, and hopefully you'll find it a lot more enjoyable.
I seem to adore American hospital dramas, ER probably being my favourite one up until it's end about a month ago now. House however seems to be getting more and more predictable and annoying, so probably the only hospital drama that is even worth watching at the moment, is Grey's Anatomy.

What is Grey's Anatomy?
=================
To really explain Grey's Anatomy to you people that have never seen or heard of it before, imagine ER with a pinch of House a pinch of Scrubs and then a lot of romance drama put in as well.
Don't expect the gritty, gritty drama that you get in ER though, you barely see any blood and it's more about the lives of a few interns and their romances and maybe dealing with becoming doctors.
========
Basic Plot
========
Staring Ellen Pompeo as the protagonist, the show follows her from the time when she follows in her mothers footsteps and becomes an intern at the hospital her mother once worked at. The show follows her and the people she meets and the friendships she makes. It also follows her romance with the apparently handsome (mingin in my opinion) Dr Shepherd who is also her boss. Oh and yeah somewhere it does have some medical dramas mixed into all of the romance.
========
The Cast
========
The protagonist of the show has to be Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo, she is the main cast member, but after watching 5 years of the show, if she or her love interest Derek are in a scene together, I'm afraid they do get forwarded as I really don't give two craps what they are talking about.
I really have no idea why Ellen Pompeo was cast in the role, I think the reason why I haven't given this show 5 stars is because of her, and Patrick Dempsey are two of the most boring people in television, what even makes it worse is that at the beginning and end of each episode Meredith Grey gives a little narration which again makes you want to smack her.
The supporting cast however are really the reason why you should watch the show. I think the most popular cast member is Katherine Heigl who plays Dr Izzie Stevens, the lovable and kind Dr, who seems to have a lot of crap thrown at her over the 5 years. Her scenes are very good, especially in the fifth season and she is probably the best actress in the show. Sandra Oh is brilliant as the bitchy, I don't care who I have to tread on to get where I want to get Dr, she also plays Meredith's best friend and has delivered some fantastic performances.
The rest of the cast are very good, there is some eye candy for us girls in the form of Justin Chambers and Eric Dane, both of who are very nice to look at, especially Eric Dane who is gorgeous. T.R Knight probably gives the best performance of the show, I've heard he's leaving after season 5, which is a great shame as he really is a good actor.
Sandra Oh- Cristina Yang
Katherine Heigl- Izzie Stevens
Justin Chambers- Alex Karev
T R Knight- George O' Malley
Chandra Wilson- Miranda Bailey
James Pickens Jr- Richard Webber
Patrick Dempsey- Derek Shepherd
Sara Ramirez- Callie Torres
Eric Dane- Mark Sloan

Season 1-3
========
The reason I have put these seasons together is until the end of season 3 I only really watched a few episodes of each season, I wasn't too much of an avid watcher, however in season 2, a fantastic performance from the brilliant Jeffrey Dean Morgan pulled me in and I've watched it ever since.
Season 1-3 follows the 5 people go from interns to residents and deal with the day to day life of becoming a resident doctor. It however is not all about the life of being a doctor it also follows their romances and other problems in their lives.
========
Season 4
========
Now that the 5 are residents, they are given interns of their own to look after. George is forced to repeat his residency. This season was alright, there were some cast members that were a waste of time but other than that, some great performances.
========
Season 5
========
Here in the UK we're just 2 episodes away from finishing season 5, in this season George joins his friends as a resident, Meredith and Derek take their relationship to the next level, Izzie ends up with Alex and then realises that she's sick and lots of other stuff happens.
========
My Opinion
========
I've always said that Lost was the show where the script writers couldn't make up their minds about what is going to happen to everyone, but this show is the same, especially with the character of Izzie Stevens played by Katherine Heigl, season 2, she falls in love with a patient, season 3 she sleeps with George whose now married, season 4 she tries to stay with George but finds herself falling for Alex whom she's previously dated, and when Heigl went and said that she didn't deserve an award because she had not been given any good scripts that year, they give her a hell of a one in season 5, by giving her an illness.
That can get quite annoying, but hey, if you've only watched a few episodes of each season, at least you'll know what season your on by what's happening to Izzie. I think the show is very good and it really is quite enjoyable, I think at times ER became too intense with all of the patients in the trauma rooms and Grey's Anatomy is a bit of light medicine. Some compare it to Scrubs, I myself could never get into Scrubs so can't really compare it.
I think the show would be fantastic if Meredith and Derek weren't in the show, they are just so boring and probably the worst actors in television at the moment, I think they are downsized by all of the fantastic performances provided by the supporting cast who are fantastic. I think the scripts are just brilliant, very new and fresh and I really like it when they do bring a little bit of House into the show by bringing in weird and scary cases which are quite hard to work out.
One episode in Season 5 showed them doing a face transplant and then in another episode in another season saw them delivering what I believe was 7 or 8 babies. Each episode is different and I can see it running for a few more seasons. I don't think it'll ever be as big as ER which was fantastic, but if you want something simple but with a little bit of medicine thrown in then this show is for you.
If you can get over the annoying protagonists and look at the supporting cast then I'm sure that you'll enjoy the show. If you're looking for a bit of eye candy, my best mate tells me constantly he only watches the show for a bit of the blonde hottie (Katherine Heigl apparently), and for us girls we do have the gorgeous Eric Dane and Justin Chambers.
========
Final Opinion
========
A very good show, it would be a lot better without the annoying protagonists but overall the rest of the cast deliver fantastic performances and it's a nice light show to watch every Thursday evening.
The final of season 5 is shown tomorrow night (18th June) on Living TV at 10.00pm, however I think Living also shows repeats of the show during the day.

Summary: A very good show, well worth watching.

- 17/06/09 Superb review. This as a show full of serious issues, lightened by comic moments, at times frivolous, at times condescending, at others fantastic and highly entertaining (Is it just me or does Callie make a totally unconvincing bi?). You've managed to capture its essence perfectly. Nicely done 8^) |
