Advantages: Funny at times
Disadvantages: Nothing special
Sue Hickson has developed quite a name for herself in terms of TV writing. Following the success of Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, she turns her pen to this funny and quirky drama, Grownups, featuring Sheridan Smith from 2 Pints as the main character Michelle.
Michelle and her friends are a group of twentysomethings trying to make something of their lives in the real world. Michelle is something of a floozy, putting herself out and using her 'talents', as it were, to gain the attention of men. Welsh Grant is madly in love with Michelle. It's never going to amount ot anything, despite them having had a night together before. He is quite small and quiet. Then there is Jenny, a Scottish woman who is one of Michelle's friends who fancies Chris, Michelle's flatmate.
There are some other recurring characters, but the sitcom generally revolves around these four. Hickson had already proved that she could create something successful, if somewhat immature, by focusing on just a few central characters, and although this is funny as well, it's not a patch on Grownups. It is very similar, which is no surprise gien the same writer trying the same formula, but it's nothing new, whereas 2 Pints was.
Some of the situations created by Hickson and the team are very funny, but I find it hard to relate to the characters. They are almost too explored, as if we are supposed to understand them and associate things about us with them a little more. The result is something a little too forced for me. I will happily watch this, and do so regularly, but it's not my first choice for something on TV, and I don't get into it quite as much as I do other sitcoms.
Overall, I rate this quite highly. It's not particularly special, but brings up a few laughs. It is generally aired on one of the digital BBC programmes (mainly BBC3) after the watershed, and does feature some more adult content than perhaps it should, but it's worth giving a watch.
Summary: Decent sitcom but nothing special

- 27/02/09 I've caught this a couple of times and found it quite funny. The barman is one of my favourites... |
