Advantages: great acting talent

Disadvantages: can desend into melodrama - but that's probably the point.

Some people think I'm sad when I say I like Holby City, and that's a shame, because it's a bloody good TV programme.

Holby City is a spin-off from one of the BBC's flagship Saturday night TV dramas, Casualty. Rather than deal with the ridiculous accidents that Casualty deals with, Holby concentrates on the complcated surgeries that some patients need. Its all 'cardiothorasics', or something like that!

In the past, Holby was just another piece of drama to fill in the duldrums of tuesday night programming, but in the past two or three years has seen a bit of a rennaisance. It's upped it's guest stars, upped it's storylines and upped its style and direction. It looks a lot more proffessional now, probably on a par to the American show ER.

Whats also great about Holby City is the quality of the acting talent that has passed through its doors. Hugh Quarshie, one of the chief medical practitioners is excellent and has starred in many big budget Hollwood movies like the new Star Wars movies and Highlander. Art Malik, now moved on to greener pastures, was also in the show for some time. Robert Powell AKA Jesus of Nazereth is also still on the show. Patsy Kensit, however annoying, also adds some Hollywood glamour to the show. Adrian Edmonson is also excellent in a non-comedic role as the tortured 'Percy'. Jane Asher has also had a more prominent role recently.

Holby City has also had its share of contoversy, there have been scenes recently of doctors drinking massive amounts of tequila before operations, which got the attention of drinks' industry body the Portman Group. Also character Staff Nurse Sandy Harper played by actress Laura Sadler, was killed in real life after falling 40ft from her boyfiend's flat window in suspicious circumstamces.

Overall, Holby City is a great bit of TV that the BBC should be proud of and one that will continue for a very long time.

Summary: a good way to spend the hour between 8 and 9 on a Tuesday.
