Advantages: Enjoyable, easy to follow

Disadvantages: A spin-off so not overly original all the time.

I am sure I am not the only one who is watching Holby City this evening. I used to be a fan of Casualty and progressed to watching Holby City when it first appeared as a spin-off from Casualty a few years ago. I would not say it is my favourite television program but it certainly now ranks above the original Casualty with me.

The drama is set in a hospital, mainly on a few central wards that deal with a variety of illnesses and injuries. Different patients and different cases come through the wards every episode and the regular appearances in the show are made by a cast of doctors and nurses.

I am particularly a fan of the relationships between some of the lead characters in this drama series. I find it very soap like and enjoy the romances and turmoils that the various characters go through with one another, especially Jack Naylor and Joseph Burns. The pair are clearly destined to be together but Joseph is busy believing himself to be above her and insists on trying to settle down with a dull nurse and her disabled child instead of raunchy, risky Jack.

I also really like Elliot in this, the Consultant who first appeared on our screens as the lovable Nigel in Eastenders many years ago. He is just as cuddly and lovable in Holby City. I like that he adds a gentle, soft touch to an otherwise harsh, strict Consultant line up.

I find Holby City very easy to get into and do not feel I need to watch every episode to understand what is going on. It is nice because with some of the soaps I watch, I find I do not understand what I have missed if I dare to go on holiday! But with Holby City, I can dip in and out as I please and always have a good idea of what is going on with the characters involved. I highly recommend giving this a try if you have previously enjoyed Casualty or you enjoy profession based dramas in general.

Summary: A great television program when I'm in the mood.

I still watch it, but I prefer the old format when it was about the hospital and patients with a little bit of emphasis on the relationships. Now the patients barely get a look in.
