Disadvantages: Schedule Only Once A Week
Holby city is the outstanding new medical drama that has swept across the United Kingdom. After the almost tragic loss of ER alias Emergency Room with the females much-favoured George Clooney, terrestrial TV was devastated. It had lost one of the best dramas that had ever braced its shores. So what was so great about ER and why has Holby city and other dramas of its genre such as Casualty continued to succeed. What is the winning formula? Medicine perhaps. Holby City has not always been a preferred show of the nations, it was always the East Enders and Brookside lovers of this world that shared the spotlight but now Holby city seems to have come from behind and has grasped the opportunity to take the thrown that ER previously occupied. You will be well aware that ER intends to re-activate their show but I believe that it will not be so easy for them to regain their previous popularity with Holby city at the thrown. Holby city is very similar to ER, but it is based in the United Kingdom instead of the States so people can relate with the characters more easily. The current storyline at the moment is about the death of a child after a drunken doctor killed him in a car accident. This is now the beauty of the storyline. For many weeks now, the nation has been judgemental of the surgeon, condemning him but it was revealed this week that an associate of his slipped Vodka into his alcoholic beverage to make it stronger than he had actually calculated. Holby city is filled with twists like this, twists that can really educate and stimulate the audience about the professional life of doctors and nurses. Holby city deals with a lot of important issues and tackles then efficiently without patronising them too much, which is the case for a lot soap operas such as Brookside. Sometimes, crucial issues are tackled in such as manner that they seem very trivial. Holby City sheers from this it deals with the relationships between nurses, doc
tors ? the professional world and the patients receiving the treatment. The show basically gives the viewer an insight into the medical profession. In one scene we see the ignorance of a surgeon, as he plays music while performing heart surgery. Now to the viewer this may appear distressing and unreasonable ? but in actual fact it helps the surgeon relax. Its these facts that make Holby city, the realization that the people saving our lives are not robots but human beings that can get emotionally attached to the situation. Other storylines also include the manner in which gays and lesbians are treated within the workplace and the problems that are encountered when the patients discover the secrets of the people treating them. Holby city is nothing graphic. Yes it takes us into the theatre but nothing gory is established further than perhaps a bit of flesh and blood. This has is advantages and its disadvantages. This means that anyone can watch this such as young people who may be interested in pursuing a career in the medical profession but also a disadvantage in the sense that it looses some of its target audience who may want to examine some of the techniques implied in different situations. Anyone that is expecting to see such detail as the procedure taken to prevent stoke or to implant electrodes are going to be gravely disappointed because this is not what Holby city is about. One must remember that these people are actors and not actual doctors and nurses. It is critical to remember this fact or one may start criticising every action and procedure emplaced ?ruining the essence of the program and what it is actually about. Holby city is certainly a welcomed addition to the BBC 1 family. It provides the watcher with an insight into the lives of people of the medical profession. With exciting and intriguing story lines who can deny the brilliance of Holby city.

- 15/02/02 I love Holby City, it's one of my favourite TV programmes. I enjoyed your review too, but I was disappointed you didn't mention some of the actors & characters in it. My favourite is Anton Meyer (George Irving). |
