Hollyoaks is a channel 4 soap opera with young people set in Manchester. The set up means it should theoretically be my favourite soap - after all, it combines things I can relate to in a form of which I love. I've watched Coronation Street and Emerdale for years, and I've seen Eastenders, Family Affairs etc.

I never watched Hollyoaks until uni though, when my housemates got into it. Frankly, I know soap operas aren't exactly high class telly, but this completely makes me cringe. It's corny, it's tacky, and the use of music just makes things laughable. In a cringeworthy way.

It's almost like it's a joke - the characters have stupid names, like 'Mercedes', and perhaps it would be ironically funny if it wasn't so obviously cheesy and trying so hard.

One thing about soaps is that traditionally they are supposed to at least pretend to be set in real life, with real people. Old, young, ugly, etc. The actors in Hollyoaks are good looking (supposedly), which makes it all into a terrible teen drama rather than a good juicy soap.

Not for me, thanks!
