Advantages: Interesting plot sometimes.

Disadvantages: Depressing, very focussed on young people.

Hollyoaks is a popular British soap, based in the town of Chester UK that aires on Channel 4 at half past six every weekday evening. Whilst many people, especially young people thrive off watching this soap, and seem unable to miss an episode sometimes, I find it is particularly depressing and that the acting isn't especially good.

How does it compare to other soaps? Well the first thing that I'd say is that it primarily tells the story of some University Students, although they are not particularly bright ones it would seem. Therefore a lot of the themes are more relevant to a younger audience. They do cover some abstract themes like schizophrenia, and it's quite interesting to see how this affects people in real life. The character to watch out for for this theme is named "Newt".

Another thing I'd say is that the acting is often pretty shocking, and I often find myself grinning on lines that have clearly been learnt by actors who are getting tired of the melodrama. I think that this bad acting would need to improved for me to really enjoy the soap, and it's alot worse than the acting in say neighbours, but this is purely my own opinion.

Finally, I find Hollyoaks really quite depressing rather than interesting. It seems that murder and adultery are common themes, and they do not really cover the older generation, who's problems are usually much less extreme. I do not like programs which end on a downer, and I find that hollyoaks often leaves me quite depressedm far more than the other soaps that I watch.

To be honest, I am not really a soap person, but hollyoaks is once of the worst ones in my opinion, because of some of the reasons I have discussed above. Unfortunately however, whilst my girlfriend still loves watching the show, I'm sure I'll be forced to watch it well into the future. What's particularly annoying is when she demands we also watch the next episode on E4.

Summary: Not my thing, but I can see how this could be quite a popular programme.
