Advantages: good storylines
Disadvantages: bad acting
Hollyoaks is a soap opera, channel 4's answer to corrie and eastenders, basically. It is less of a giant than those shows, but nonetheless has a solid following and regularly picks up at award ceremonies. It's more respected than home and away, anyway!
History...
Hollyoaks was created by the man behind Grange Hill and Brookside, Phil Redmond. It was first broadcast in 1995. It is now produced by Lucy Allan, Bryan Kirkwood's replacement, the man who many argue made Hollyoaks great.
Plot...
The plot is about the people living in a suburb of Chester, and is centred around the young characters, who go to Hollyoaks Community College and also to the school Hollyoaks High. There are about 50 characters, and the soap will follow a few family's storylines for a week, then rotate so you don't get bored!! It is mainly focused on the younger generation and has dealt with many issues including coming out and anorexia. There is a helpline at the end of the show which can be rung if some of the issues they present are relevant. It is used in a good way, not just to shock.
Characters and acting...
The problem with Hollyoaks is sometimes it's a bit naff or cheesy. Some of the writing can be awful, though the overall storylines are usually very gripping. The acting can be pretty shocking as well!
The opening credits look like the credits for some sort of 70s porn show as well!!
