Advantages: Some good storylines
Disadvantages: Stories run at an unrealistic pace
Well, as I have already reviewed Neighbours I decided I should review my other Aussie soap 'Home and Away'.
Home and Away in Summer Bay, which is meant to be just outside Sydney, Australia. It first appeared in 1988 and I have watched it on and off over the years. When I was a teenager I used to be so jealous of the uniforms they had, but when I look at them now, I'm glad I didn't have one like that!
When Home and Away first began it centred around the Caravan Park and Tom and Pippa Fletcher, who were foster parents. These days it centres around the Caravan Park (lol!!!), the diner, the beach and the school.
The main characters/families at the moment are:
Alf Stewart, his sister Morag and her family, his niece Martha and her husband jack
Irene and her foster children Belle, Annie and Geoff
Miles (caravan park owner) and Kirsty, kirsty's son Ollie and Miles' foster children Jai and Melody.
Roman and his daughter and Aden (who is staying for a while)
Actually, the thought has just occurred to me that there are a disproportionate number of children fostered in the Bay!
At the moment, there is a storyline centred around Alzheimer's, illegal dumping of waste and of course the Belle/Aden will they/won't they romance! A gripe I have with Australian soaps is that the storylines move at a ridiculous rate. For example, Ross was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about 2 weeks ago and there were maybe 2 days of lead up symptoms. His illness has deteriorated loads since then. If you compare that to the fantastic storyline in Coronation Street in which Mike Baldwin's deterioration into Alzheimer's was so sensitively, there is such a difference in the quality of the storylines.
However, Home and Away does have some good storylines in it. When I was in Sydney this year I made it to the beach where it is filmed. Sadly, they weren't filming that day (I was dying to see the legend Alf) but it was a good trip and nice to swim on the beach.
A lot of famous people started off in Home and Away, such as Heath Ledger, Isla Fisher, Danni Minogue, Naomi Watts and Julian McMahon.
Home and Away is on Monday-Friday at 2.15pm-2.45pm, 6pm-6.30pm on Five and you can watch First Chance Home and Away on Fiver at 6.30pm at weekdays.
Summary: I wouldn't worry if I missed an episode
