Advantages: Safe comedy with some laughs

Disadvantages: Very middle of the road

This US imported character features the comic talent of Tim Allen, former convicted drug dealer and talented stand up artist the sit com revolves around the host of a home improvement programme played by Allen in the role of Tim "The Toolman" Taylor who is rather accident prone and his obsession with adapting his tools to produce more and more power is part of his problem.

A lot of the comedy comes from the cosy suburban home life with his wife Jill and three sons, the show has run for a number of series and it is easy to spot as you chart the growth of the children in each new series into adulthood. The other main character and the but of a lot of the jokes is Al the assistant host on the TV show, he is a big bear of a man who still lives with his mom and the repartee between the two characters is very strong.

The final character on which there is a long standing in joke within the show is Tim's neighbour Wilson who is rather eccentric and the one Tim goes to in times of trouble , which is ever episode, and these usually revolve around relationship problems, Wilson then gives advice using some sort of metaphor which Tim sort of gets but plays up to his own ignorance of anything outside of tools and cars. The big in joke is that you never get to fully see Wilsons face in the series.

Overall this is a fairly safe American sit com, there is a bit of moralising in each episode to promote traditional family values and it lacks the biting satire of Seinfeld, Fraiser or Scrubs but it can still be a mildly entertaining way to pass thirty minutes but is not something would go out of my way to watch. Currently the only cable channel I have seen showing it is ABC1 which means that there are endless repeats each week of the same coule of series.

Summary: Average US import.

Not likely to see any "improvement", not that it ever needed it, as the final series was produced about 7 years ago, hence the repeats.

I've seen this now and again, it's deffo one of the unfunniest sitcoms around - even by American sitcom standard...
