Advantages: Hugh Laurie, as House, is simply a genius, despite being somewhat antithetical to the classic ideal
Disadvantages: Waiting for the next episode, can often take a long time :P
As a prospective medic, I always strayed away from medically based programs, other than Scrubs of course. However, at the insistence of a good friend, I decided I would watch an episode of House ... and I became hooked.
The anti-philanthropic House, is at worst amusing, and at best simply genius, and it is testament to the legend that is Hugh Laurie that he can pull such a role off - whether he be verbally sparring with his colleagues, or playing the guitar, House represents the very antithesis of the classic doctor, and in that is much of the charm of the program.
That is not to say that the show is one man - the strength of the other characters, and the way they interact with House, whilst also having their own back stories, ranging from brothers in jail, to Huntington's Chorea, helps endear the character to the viewer.
The shows all have a very similar feel, with a patient coming in with an ailment, that initially proves to be undiagnosable, and then near the end House will suddenly have a brainwave and come to the rescue. However, monotony is avoided by side stories, and House's very character.
All in all, a fantastic medical drama, which when looking from a British medical perspective seems completely ludicrous, is simply not worthy missing. The fifth season is currently airing in America.
Summary: Probably the best medical drama out there
