Advantages: Funny, Light, Good cast
Disadvantages: not very original
‘I Saw You’ is ITV1’s latest romantic/comedy drama starring Fay Ripley of ‘Cold Feet’ fame. A pilot was shown last year, but I missed this; would have been good to repeat it before the start of this new series. It is shown on Tuesdays at 9.30pm on ITV (at least it was supposed to be until the football came along; the last episode is on Saturday night) it’s written and produced by the ‘Cold Feet’ team and directed by Tom Vaughan. It follows a similar format to many of these dramas; ITV has obviously jumped onto the back of ‘Cold Feet’s’ success and is coming at this genre from all angles, we’ve had ‘Bob & Rose’ now ‘I Saw You’ is vying for the ratings. The Story so far… Fay Ripley plays Grace, a thirty-something, cynical, single mother in search of a man. Grace and her partner Ben split up after a silly row, Grace determined to find love, moves from one suitor to another (none of which seem suitable) while Ben, who still harbours feelings for Grace, tries to build a relationship with his dentist! In the first episode we saw Grace succumbing to the charms of a wealthy Lord before realising it’s just ‘not for her’, in the last episode a widower (she met whilst working as a clown at his son’s party) which just didn’t work, and we are told that, on Sunday, her ex & father of her son, Oscar, is to return…. We wait to see the consequences. We follow both Grace’s helter-skelter affairs and Ben’s attempts at true love, and although they are an improbable pair, you can’t help but hope they get back together! The script is witty and sharp; Fay Ripley portrays Grace’s cynicism very well and brings great humour to the show. It’s easy enough to get into, and even if you missed the first two episodes take a look at the last one tommorow. Cast: Grace - Fay
Ripley Main character, single mother and jazz singer. Ben - Paul Rhys Optician & Grace’s foppish but charming on/off partner. Oscar Grace’s son. Sam – Daniel Lapaine Is to play Grace’s ex and father of her son on Sunday. (is also Fay’s husband in real life). Also stars Daniel Lapaine, Darren Tighe, Rachel Isaac. (Could not get details of full cast I'm afraid). Overall: Ok it’s not as good as ‘Cold Feet’, but that’s a tough benchmark. It’s funny, inoffensive and light and I enjoyed it. It has a strong cast who deliver the script well and it fills a gap in the rom/com telly department at the moment.
