Advantages: Colourful, bubbly characters

Disadvantages: Perhaps the addictiveness when your child watches it!

In The Night Garden is a children's television show centering around a group of strangely monikered, but brightly coloured characters. It is in a very similar mould to the Teletubbies, but with perhaps a bit more variety, certainly where the characters are concerned.

We have Iggle Piggle who is a tall blue chap who insists on carrying a blanket around with him and ALWAYS been the last to retire to bed at night, and when he does he sets sail on his small boat, wrapped cosily in his blanket and drifts away as, I assume, the child watching is supposed to do given it is generally the last thing on CBeebies on a night time.

Next we have Upsy Daisy, another tall character this time a female who always wears a smile and has a very loud haircut, not to mention dress and tights, she is good friends with Iggle Piggle.

Makka Pakka is perhaps my favourite, not that I am sure what any of the characters are supposed to be but I haven't the slightest idea what Makka Pakka is meant to be. He lives in a cave, likes stones and washes things with his sponge. Bizarre to say the least, but strangely entertaining.

We also have several other characters such as the Tombliboos who I can only describe as rotund triplets, they do have a very cosy looking hideout though it must be said. Along with the Tombliboos there are the Pontipines, which could either be a large family or a small school, the Haa Hoos, GIANT colourful shapes whose purpose I still haven't figured out and then you have the Ninky Nonk and the Pinky Ponk, I can never remember which one is which, one is on wheels and the other flys.

It might sound like a bit of a strange review, from the point of view of the parent as opposed to the child but I felt compelled to write it in this way. I like the show, it entertains me. It entertains my girlfriends little girl too, perhaps slightly more but even so..

Ok, as an adult I cannot decipher what on earth goes on when these characters get together and I'm sure that the little ones can't either, but are they entertained by these likeable characters bounding around a Teletubby style set and having fun along the way? Absolutely.

This is one show that I would be happy for any child of mine to watch. Seeing them fall in love with it and then be pressured to part with my hard earned to buy the miriad of ITNG merchandise is a different story entirely though!

Summary: Very entertaining for small children and keeps them quiet while you make the tea or clean the house

Makka Pakka, Haa Hoos and Ninky Nonk? I miss the days when characters could be simply called Fred or Alan.
