Advantages: Great gadgets and plots

Disadvantages: The film it spawned didn't live up to expectations

Inpsector Gadget was an immensely popular kids' TV cartoon that featured a bumbling policeman with no common sense and supplied him with every possible gadget known to man, as part of hbis body, his suit and his hat! The cartoon was very popular among my friends at school when it aired, and was one of my favourite cartoons of the 1990s.

Inspector Gadget episodes ran for about 20 minutes each, and when they were shown on ITV, there was a break in a moment of peril as the lead character, Gadget, wound up in some trouble. His enemy was the evil Dr Claw. We only ever saw his arm with a claw-like fake hand on the end, sitting on a swivel chair, preparing some foolproof evil plan, only to constantly get fooled by Gadget and his helpers at the last second.

Gadget, in his bumbling sense, needed more help than just his gadgets, and thus he had a helping hand from his niece Penny and their dog Brains. Gadget's chief would also randomly appear at the beginning of each episode to give him a top secret mission which would self-destruct (homage to Mission Impossible here!) after being read. Chief would often get blown up, but only in a cartoon sense, so would be okay really!

Gadget always thwarted Claw and his henchmen, often without realising, but it was his gadgets that thrilled me and other kids. All he had to do was say 'Go go Gadget........' and then an item, and it would invariably appear from somewhere. My favourite was Go go Gadget Helicopter, where a set of rotor blades and controlling handles would appear from Gadget's hat.

Inspector Gadget was a great cartoon. If you get the chance to see a rerun, do so, your kids will probably love it as well. The cartoon spawned a film which did not do so well critically or commercially, and is not a patch on the cartoon, so don't be dissuaded if you've seen it - watch the cartoon instead!
