Advantages: great storytelling

Disadvantages: a bit sickly in places

Jericho had such a fantastic start, but was never really given the chance to evolve before it was mercilessly cancelled, twice.

The basic premise of the show concerned Jericho, a small mid-western town like many others. However, a nuclear attack is launched upon America from an unknown source and as society starts to disintegrate the townsfolk have to start to work together to survive.

Like most other American shows the quality comes in the characters. Skeet Ulrich plays Jake Green, someone who has come back to the town on the eve of the attack and ends up becoming the hero (and attracts all the town's babes). Lennie James plays Hawkins - a man who seems to know much more than he is letting on about the attacks. Gerald McRaney plays the town's mayor and is a man who tries to hold everything together as the town battles radiation sickness, violence and invasions from neighbouring towns.

I thoroughly enjoyed Jericho and watched all of the first season pretty quickly. It's a bit sickly in some places and lacks the punch of early 80's nuclear films like The Day After and Threads, but it is quality entertainment along the same lines of 24.

Each episode ends on a cliffhanger and makes you want to watch more - on some evenings you can get through several episodes before its time for bed!

If you see a copy of the first season of Jericho available cheaply then its well worth picking up and giving a go, especially if you enjoy American drama or good sci-fi. Its such a shame that the networks cancelled Jericho after the first season due to poor ratings. The fans managed to persuade the networks to allow them a short second season. There are rumours of a film version of the show which I would really be up for - come on guys give us more Jericho!

Summary: original sci-fi
