Advantages: entertaining
Disadvantages: exploitation of the vulnerable
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
Jerry Springer hosts this talk show where troubled guests get advice on their problems from members of the public or the host himself. The show is 'trash TV', focusing on sensationalist issues such as adultery, bestiality, fetishes or transvestitism, and often features fighting between guests.
IS IT ANY GOOD:
Trash TV in its purest form, the Jerry Springer show makes no apology for being an out and out freak show. The topics are deliberately controversial, and fighting and breast flashing are actively encouraged. If you like this sort of thing, then this is the show for you.
Springer, a former politican, has hosted some really weird episodes. Perhaps the oddest I have seen saw a group of midgets ripping their shirts off and fighting over a girl who then pole danced and flashed to the audience. It's gone beyond talk-show, and dropped into freak-show, but it's strangely addictive viewing.
Springer is a genial host, presenting with humour and kindness, and it's nice to see he doesn't take himself too seriously.
The show has had its fair share of controversy over the years, particularly for the way it exploits the vulnerable guests (but don't all these shows do that?)
Funnily enough, all swearing is beeped out, and all breast flashing blurred out too, so you need to be lucky enough to be in the studio audience to really get the full effect!
IF YOU LIKED IT:
The closest we get to it in the UK is the Jeremy Kyle show, but Kyle himself is a really aggressive host, and not at all likeable like Springer.
IN CONCLUSION:
Trash TV at its worst, Springer makes no apology for the awful content of this show, and the world eats it up happily.
Summary: view with caution
