Advantages: Fun and outrageously silly

Disadvantages: Does Jerry really care anymore?

I confess. I used to love this show. I think this was because I am talking about more than 10 years ago, when this show first aired on British TV - it was also so new and shocking. Never before had the British Public seen such a dynamic and scandalous 'chat show.' Kilroy just wasn't in the same element.

The Jerry Springer show is not your ordinary chat show. It does not tackle serious issues and offer backstage councelling and advice. But what it does offer the viewers, is bizzare guests with no morals and dysfunctional relationships, people with bizzare fetishes and 'Trailer Trash TV.'

The usual set up is this. A guest comes on stage and talks about how he or she is cheating on their spouse. In fact they are not just cheating, but they are in fact a transexual with seven other lovers - male and female. And by the way, they also enjoy wearing nappies.

This is no problem for host Jerry Springer, who takes it in his stride. Jerry makes jokes and the audio department chip in with the odd buzzing noise when the guest says something silly, to emphasise this point.

Then the cheated partner comes out and is told the news. Typically, the partner will scream and shout and a chair or two will be thrown accross the stage, sometimes knocking the wicked spouse unconscious. Obviously there are bouncers in the background, but their timing is impeccible - they only intervene once serious harm has already been carried out. In the meantime common scenes are hairpulling, wig removal, punching and eyepoking.

However we must remember that all of this is theraputic in itself. And of course good exercise - so there are hidden health benefits too.

More recently, the show has become even more silly - because some guests have the privilage of arriving on stage to see a table of food laid out before them. Naturally this leads to food fights - because it appears that no guest is allowed on the show unless they are willing and able to be violent and aggressive.

Jerry's 'Final Thought' - his view at the end of the show- used to be thought provoking and inspiring. But after many years with the same types of show it is becoming a bit tired and repetitive. I can actually tell that Jerry no longer cares about the guests - he just sees it as another crazy show and is thinking of a lavish retirement.

My personal favourite shows are ' My boyfriend wears nappies', ' I enjoy eating women's shoes' and 'Are you sleeping with my mother.' Timeless and Classic shows.

Definately worth a watch, but not as good as it used to be.

Summary: The original classic - but loosing it's touch.

I used to love this show. But there are only so many times you can hear about a transexual who married his horse (who was really his Dad) and who wears nappies as he strips in a club managed by the KKK before you start thinking "I've seen this all before". Loving your work Kate.
