JesseNewest Review: ... something on the basis of stripping the emotion and profundity out of Friends, but somehow they have. Perhaps the most important difference is that whereas in Friends all six characters have their quirks but in other ways are surprisingly urbane, in Jesse there are just the two well-adjusted ones (both female), and the other four, who are unashamedly kooky. The other difference is that while in Friends the second focus (after the appartment) is a café, in Jesse it’s a hospital. It’s not great art. But you’ll enjoy it. ... more |

I first discovered Jesse when I flicked the telly on some time between 1 and 1.30, hoping to find some vacuous American sitcom over which to enjoy a ham sandwich and a cup of tea. Cybill, I knew, was a possibility, as was Suddenly Susan. But this was just amazing. Jesse is, quite simply, Friends Lite. I came to this conclusion within five minutes, and was not surprised to find out at the end that it came from the same people (Kaufman, Crane, and the other one). It has six characters; three blokes and three girls. They are in their late twenties. Four are in relationships with each other (which doesn’t strictly correspond, but it does if you count Ross and ... Read the complete review

Fabulous sitcom from the team that brought us Friends. Stars Christina Applegate (Remember Married With Children, anyone ?) as a young mother and her associated household of wild and wacky characters. It's as sharp and well-acted as Friends used to be ... Before Friends became The Cosby Show. Mmmm. Christina is funny and the script is sharp and often laugh-out-loud. You care about the characters and if it sometimes gets a little bit schmaltzy well, this is prime-time US televisison. Note the "US" bit. Channel 4, as wise as ever with their sitcom imports, are starting to go down a BBC2 route re: scheduling (Seinfeld at midnight, anyone ?) and are now ... Read the complete review

I first saw this sitcom in America where it was shown after the more popular 'Friends', they obviously wanted it to succeed to give it such a coverted slot, and was suprised when Channel 4 started showing it here during lunchtimes. Here is the premise : Jesse (Christina Applegate from Married with Children)is a single mother training to be a nurse. She has her old school friends around her to help out and her cuban neighbour and lover Diego next door. It has all the same stereotypes such as the Dumb One, The Foreigner, The Sarcastic One etc and adds nothing really new to the genre. I can't help liking it though, if only for Christina Applegate who does ... Read the complete review

Hmm, how to describe Jesse. Well, its a sitcom about Jesse, a single mom, living with her dad and brothers in Buffallo. Jesse is played by Christina Apllegate, and she's not great in the part, but not bad either. I think she was cast partly for her looks. But, she is very difficult to watch: she's got one of those faces thats so perfect, so smooth and flawless, your gaze just slips off it to the side. I try and try to look at her but my eyes just can't focus. Which isn't a bad thing as she's got some very very sexy actress friends, especially the one with black hair. They play bar maids but that doesn't matter at this time. So, ... Read the complete review
