Disadvantages: There are only 8 episodes to series 1!

'Kath and Kim' is the comedic fictional tale of an Australian mother and daughter living their suburban lives. Jane turner stars as Kath Day a 40-something divorcee and Gina Rile stars as Kim Craig, her 20-something daughter. Kath is a ditzy woman who likes to think of herself as the envy of others. She is a keep fit fanatic (she has some wonderful shell-suit tracksuits to prove it!) and is dating Kel Knight who is a purveyor of fine meats, not a butcher! Kim is a self-confessed 'hornbag' currently separated from her husband Brett, who hates her job, sponges of her Mum and eats 'dippity bix' all day! We also see her 'second best friend' Sharon Strzelecki, expertly played by Magda Szubanski - the opening credits have her listed as a special guest, despite appearing in every episode!

Episodes
Sex - Kim turns up on her Mums doorstep and announces that her marriage to Brett 'OVAH'! and moves bank in only to be disgusted to find Kel and her Mum are 'doing it'.

Gay - Kim takes up golf with Sharon and overhears conversations leading Kath to think Kim is a lesbian. Added to this the fact she discovers Kel was in the Navy and experimented, means Kath is in a tiz!

Sport - Kim joins Sharon's netball team so she can get back at the girls she thinks seduced Brett when he was drunk. In typical Kim fashion, not a lot of effort is put in to the netball

Fat - Kim cant get into her bridesmaid's dress so she tries out the Celine (Dion) Cuisine diet.

Old - Kim makes digs about Kath age so she begins her mid-life crisis. Kath also starts to get worries well Kel keep disappearing with no explanation...

Money - Kath is holding an underwear party to raise money for her horse drawn carriage for her wedding, which Sharon and Kim 'model' at. Kath promotes her new design to rival the G string - the T bar (it's just a G string worn the wrong way around!)

Party - Kim is organises Kath's hens night but things take a disastrous turn for the Buck and hen parties.

The Wedding - The big day arrives and what a day it is. Terror/hilarity ensures with a wild horse, some Velcro and too much punch!

DVD extras include the obligatory bloopers and a look at Kims wedding video

Catch phrases have spawned between those who know the series well - "Noice, different, unusual", "what pacifically does that entail", the list goes on - but far from being a gimmick, it just makes you love the characters even more.

The series manages to be a caricature of an Australian family with farcical comedy as well as a much more subtle, well observed humour. The lives of Kath and Kim are easy to connect to, if not always relate to. Sharon is possibly my favourite character; constantly suffering some ailment that's manifests in sores on her body, always hopeful of love despite her appearance and generally doing better than Kim even though Kim believes she is far superior.

The series aired in Oz in 2002 but took about 3 years to make its way to the UK to BBC2 but 3 series have now been shown and hopefull the fourth wil appear soon. It has one several awards, in particular the 2003: Most Outstanding Comedy Program at the Logies.

Laugh out loud funny and beautifully observed. Well worth watching. Now, look at mwoi, look at mwoi, I've got one thing to say to you.......go and buy it
(that'll mean something if you know the show, or else it may encourage you to go and find out!)
