Advantages: Really intelligent and witty writing, plus great performances from the cast

Disadvantages: None!

I've got one word to say to you Kim.... is just one of the many catchphrases that you will learn and love about Kath and Kim. This Australian show is set in the home of Kath, an exercise fanatic who's recently embarked on a relationship with local man Kel. Kim is Kath's daughter. She's overweight and whiney and has a love-hate relationship with her husband. Kath is the heroine of the piece and Kim is the bad guy, although only on a superficial level.

Kath and Kim are played by Jane Turner and Gina Riley, who also created, write and produce the show. They're both about the same age in real life so it adds to the comedy that Kath is supposed to be about 30 years older than Kim. In some ways it adds to the comedic effect of Kim always trying to dress too young for her age, and of Kath's success in her fight to maintain her youth.

For me (and I suspect many others) the best character in this series is Sharon Strzelecki (Magda Szubanski). Sharon is Kim's "second-best friend", even though Kim appears to hate her and puts her down at every opportunity just to make herself feel better. Sharon is an overweight netball fanatic with a skin complaint, but is surprisingly successful with the men. She's dim, yet kind, and is usually Kim's lapdog but she does, on the odd occasion, stand up for herself and put Kim firmly in her place. Sharon is the real underdog and she makes the viewer really root for her and we're always very that Kim needs Sharon more than Sharon needs Kim, despite what Kim would have Sharon think.

We get to see the ups and downs of Kath and Kim's lives, including some hilarious romantic encounters between Kath and her fella Kel. It also becomes quite plain that there is not much love between Kim and her husband, and she ends up leaving him, only to be replaced by a dog! All of the show is really light-hearted and not even a little bit dark. The writing is really intelligent and witty and there are some really great catch-phrases. You will definitely be quoting them after a few episodes!

Summary: I defy you not to laugh
