Disadvantages: Not Good!
I admit that I watch a lot of rubbish on TV - but it's normally rubbish that I (shamefully) enjoy, and is rightfully given obscure time-slots on obscure channels. There is however, rubbish which I really can't stand which takes prime-time space on the main channels, clogging up the airwaves with its general awfulness.
I apologise if this review ends up sounding like a bit of a rant, but 'Katy Brand's Big Ass Show' is one of the least funny pieces of supposedly funny television that I have ever had the misfortune to see. I forced myself to watch two more of the shows last night, just in case I was missing something - but alas, I don't think I was.
What is it with comedy and 'Brands'? - Jo Brand, Russell Brand, Katy Brand - each getting slightly less funny with each Branded incarnation. Actually, Jo Brand and Russell Brand are frequently funny, whereas katy Brand seldom is.
Each thirty-minute show involves Brand doing her done-to-death routines include 'The Queen' (where her majesty is given a Ray Winstone type persona, and ends up saying "F*** off" or something along those lines) - perhaps amusing on the first viewing, but not on the 100th time around. Then there is 'Captain Rosie' - which is just rubbish, and 'Jesus' Girlfriend' - which, well I'm not even going to waste words writing about.
The best (if you can call it 'best') part of the show is probably Katy's take on music videos, and whilst most of them are pretty average, there have been a couple of (fairly) amusing ones - I once felt the corners of my mouth twitch upwards into some distant semblance of a smile - but that's about it.
In the latest series, Brand has brought in a few new characters including Jennifer Aniston - whose catchphrase is 'I'm fine' - which isn't that funny, and seems a rehash of last season's Kate Winslett who said "im normal".
Although she's probably a very nice person in real life, I would be happy to present Katy Brand's Big Ass Show with the title of 'Unfunniest sketch show on TV' - it's boring, offensive and incredibly annoying. I'm not really a fan of Katherine Tate either, but Tate's work one hundred times better than this rubbish. I think what annoys me most is the fact that there are so many talented comedians out there who would kill for a slot on ITV2 - yet the dubiously skilled Brand is presented with a second series in which to churn out this bland material.
Oh and, if you must watch it, it's shown on Thursdays on ITV2 at 10pm
Unsubtle and unfunny... can you tell I don't like it...? ;)
Summary: Awful 'Comedy'
