Katy Brands Big Ass Show
Advantages: Katy herself - some of the spoof songs
Disadvantages: No laugh-out-loud moments, plenty of cringes
After watching a couple of shows and being decidedly not amused, I flicked to the cable tv 'on demand' and settled down to give her another chance.
The first sketch was a spoof of the singer Rhianna's 'Umbrella' song called 'Bad Spella'. Katy was dressed in Rhianna-type clothes and even, perhaps a little unwisely, 'blacked up' for the song in terrible stage make-up. I did, in fact, enjoy this spoof as it reeled off many better rhymes that go with umbrella (with associated visuals). I've watched a great deal of 'French & Saunders' in my time, and this song was as good as the song spoofs they do - at least in the written material. I do think, however, that visually, 'French & Saunders' improve the comedy itself (two of them and both better better clowns).
Her sketches are based around a few characters that she repeats in each show (including Lily Allen and Jennifer Anniston). This is usually a winning formula. The problem is that I do not find them at all funny - some are interesting, yes, but not funny. For example, there was a tiny sketch about Russell Crowe appearing on a sketch show reading a simplistic poem and then throwing a fit. It was clearly not worth the effort of Katy getting all dragged up as Crowe (at least an hour in make-up) for a miniscule sketch that made the point that Crowe is a bit of a Prima Dona. I quite enjoyed a sketch about the deluded wife of a serial killer - but not in a laughing way.
There are several really depressing moments in the show such as the inclusion of a character farting. These moments make my spirits sink even further. They are a cheap shot of infantile comedy; I don't know how they make it through the editing process.
Katy Brand is a larger than life character - confident and very watchable in herself- it's just that them material is not wonderful. I see her as more of a character actress and I expect that one day we might be appreciating her in something that is much more satisfying to watch.
The show ends with another spoof - this time with the 'Pet Shop Boys'. Some ok moments but I think that there was much more milage that was not squeezed out of the idea. Again, lots of expense (extras, costumes, props) for very few titters!
Summary: Lets hope someone hurries up and gets Katy into character acting in some decent material.
