For about a year after Keeping Up With The Kardashians was first aired I decided to give it a watch since there was nothing else on the television that I would watch, and I must admit after the first episode I saw I was hooked. Its one of those shows where you cant help but watch the whole way through and by the end of an episode you feel like you cant wait for another whole week to watch the next. Luckily for Kardashian fans they play plenty of repeated episodes from previous seasons throughout the week.
So what makes the show so brilliant? The whole family are absolutley crazy (which I love), they are always playing hilarious pranks on each other and all of them have a great sense of humor, especially the mother Kris Jenner who usually falls into being a victim as the 3 older famous sisters plot.
On a downside, some of the scenes look to have been set-up, but you don't care because its so entertaining. I love the whole family, and whether your waiting to see more about Kim's hectic life, Khloe's mischevious ways or the latest drama between Kourtney and Scott there is something for everyone in thia hit reality tv show.
Sometimes love is about compromise, when you desperately want to watch the football or a documentary about the ways people in Burkina Faso are developing new means of surviving and your partner says you have to watch 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' you do it for love, that must be the only reason as this is dull as Coldplay covering James Blunt.
The programme is shown on the E! channel on satelite randomly and on Viva on Freeview.
The basic premise is that this is a reality television show about the Kardashians a family of Armenian American stock, famous because their deceased father was OJ Simpsons lawyer at his murder trial.
It really is that tenuous, their step father Bruce Jenner was apparently an Olympic gold winning athlete back in the day which is pretty cool, but still not enough to justify a programme.
This is the kind of programme beloved by people who like E! Online, produced by Ryan Seacrest it follows the traditional formula of having a number of staged events scripted as happening during shooting to provide a narrative for things to go right or wrong.
The programme mainly follows Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian (I don't want to criticise the names but could someone in that family not pronounce their C's?). The girls seem to spend more and more time in their underwear even the pregnant Kourtney, possibly due to cuts in the clothing budget.
The show follows Kim who is a famous model and reality star (It does turn in on itself in the fact that the show is about these famous people, but they are only really famous because they appear on a show about them being famous!). She has meetings about modelling jobs, buys clothes, ponders whether to strip for Playboy and falls out a lot with her mum who is her manager and seems to desperately want to vicariously continue being 23 through her daughters.
Khloe is the strong tomboy who doesn't have much success with guys but runs the girls clothes shop, Kourtney is a constant in the show moaning and spending time with her equally annoying boyfriend.
The show I watched involved the two youngest daughters, half siblings of the three K's, who were prancing around being filmed by a creepy teen as they pretended to be their sisters.
I found this utterly uncomfortable on every level, the fact a family could let their kids do this, the fact some guy could film them without being knocked sparko by the girl's brother when he found out or the fact that whilst this was going on, the whole incident was being filmed by a responsible Tv crew. It was clearly staged and I would question the parents and the producers as they had the opportunity to cut this kind of weirdness from their show.
Other episodes include Kim meeting Hugh Hefner to consider stripping for playboy, the mother stripping off (Which she seems desperate to do), the father feeling desperately outnumbered and flummoxed by everything that goes on, and Khloe going on a date with obviously bad results.
Some of the stories have realism as Khloe is arrested for Drink Driving or a sex tape of Kim Kardashian is released and the family have to deal with it, but overall this is watching people who weren't famous, sell themselves out for a few dollars and basically recreate their lives for others entertainment, as you can tell I resent missing the football or something with some grounding in reality to watch this manufactured tosh, it follows the same format as Snoop Dogg's show, Girls of the Playboy Mansion's Show and so many others of this genre, its unoriginal, unappealing and annoying.
Keeping up with the Kardashians is one of those programmes that you have to take with a pinch of salt really, it is meant to be purely watched for entertainment reasons, hence its inclusion on the channel E!. I honestly tend to not take it too seriously though I can occasionally find myself getting truly annoyed at the people on screen making a complete spectacle of themselves for the sake of money and fame...makes you wonder how far people will go if you push them.
The basic gist of the show is that it is a reality television programme based around the Kardashian family and their day to day antics along with their relationships, tantrums and love affairs. It does technically feature the Jenner family also as their stepfather is Bruce Jenner, a 1976 Olympic Decathlon winner who married Kris Kardashian in 1991. Kris was originally married to Robert Kardashian , the defence attorney for OJ Simpson in his murder trial but they divorced in 1989 and he sadly died in 2003 of cancer.
Kim was originally the most well known of the Kardashian sisters as she has been involved in more widely spread campaigns and has a tendency of attending literally any party she can. She is often referred to as one of the better known socialites, along with Paris Hilton and has a relatively extensive background in modelling, whilst dabbling in the acting industry and television appearances, such as Dancing with the Stars in 2008 (almost like she can put her name to literally anything!).
Personally from watching the show, I think she is quite highly strung and easily antagonised, and although she appears to be slightly air headed she has a savvy business-like manner, as she co-owns a boutique called D-A-S-H with her sisters. She seems to slightly ooze this constant need for attention and this can cause a lot of friction between herself and the rest of her siblings as they often won't cater to her needs. Throughout a lot of the episodes she seems particularly hung up on her ex Reggie Bush though she currently seems to be dating footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
Khloe is the youngest of the original Kardashian sisters and in my opinion the most petulant and spoilt one of the entire family, with her tendency to argue and keep secrets from her family. She is classically known to have kept the fact she was getting married to Lamar Odom from the L.A. Lakers after just three months of having known him.
In one of the episodes you clearly see Bruce finding out about the engagement on the television which obviously upsets him and causes problems with him and Khloe.
Khloe is a lot more likely to answer back to any member of the family that disagrees with her and she often shows that she is quite strong in her opinions, previously having reduced Kim to tears with her comments.
She is also a co-owner of the boutique D-A-S-H and in 2009 it was announced that herself and Kourtney were getting their own spin-off show on E! Called Kourtney and Khloe take Miami. Her most infamous moment was having to spend some time in prison for her Driving Under the Influence charge which was of course shown on the programme.
Kourtney is the quieter of the sisters who in the episodes I am watching is currently pregnant with her first child (however she gave birth to her son Mason in December 2009) from, in my opinion a total idiot.
I am really shocked by the amount of rubbish and bad behaviour she puts up with from Scott as he is shown in one episode not offering to help his heavily pregnant girlfriend when she wants help making a crib for their baby. She is another of the savvy business women as she also owns part of their boutique D-A-S-H.
Kris and Bruce are the mother and stepfather respectively and both strive to make their children happy in each and every episode. Kris does have a terrible tendency of taking over with anything major that occurs, which can be seen in Khloe's wedding preparations as well as during the purchase of all the baby products for Kourtney.
She is often seen as controlling and slightly overbearing but is also shown to do this because she is fiercely protective of her brood. Bruce is level headed but can be emotional which leads to many fights and disagreements in the family. He is father to Kendall and Kylie, the youngest members of the cast.
Rob is the brother of Khloe, Kim and Kourtney and isn't shown as much as his slightly pushier sisters. He tends to be a quiet and calculated antagonist in the family dramas that occur as well as playing peacemaker when it all gets out of hand. He seems to be in love with his ex girlfriend for most of the later episodes, whom he cheated on and is seen to be trying to get back in her good books at his sister's wedding...it doesn't work so well unfortunately and he is left holding her bag while she dances with the other single girls.
Kendall and Kylie are the youngest of the family and aren't featured much in the series but they are quite educated in the ways of how being on television works and don't act up or behave anything but perfectly.
I don't watch the show often but when there is nothing on television there is nothing better than watching a rubbish reality programme with feuds, backstabbing, love affairs and cheating.
The Kardashians.............a family more desparate for fame than Jordan and Paris Hilton put together, but boy do they make good trashy tv!
Incase you havent heard of them (which you probably havent as they arent as big here as they are in the US) they are mainly only famous because A-Middle daughter Kim had a sex tape out with a minor celebs brother (the signer Brandys brother Ray J) and B-Their late father Robert was the lawyer who represent OJ Simpson in his murder trial. There you go, that now means that this family are considered celebrities and have their own show on the E! channel.
The family is made up of Kris Jenner (mother) Bruce Jenner (yes, the sportsman and stepfather to the oldest 4) Oldest daughter Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, the only boy Rob and two youngest daughters whos father is Bruce, Kendall and Kylie. The show is the same standard half scripted half reality show that follows the family around their day to day glamourous fame seeking life. To be honest though Kim seems to have become the biggest star from all of this as she has given her name to pretty much anythting going including slimming pills, salad bars, shoes, clothes etc etc, oh and she has also posed for Playboy. She also seems to be the most boring family member aswell though and is far too up herself and always complaining how hard a life she has and how much she works (yes taking your clothes off and doing interveiws talking about yourself for thousands of dollars must become pretty tiring Kim!)
My favourites to watch are Kourtney and Khloe. They really are hillarious and seem the only people in the family who actually realise that they have no actual talent and shouldnt take this fame thing so seriously. Although they arent immune to the lure of doing stupid things for money as Khloe posed nude for a PETA campain and Kourtney was actually filmed giving birth! That must have been some paycheck!
Apart from all the funny stuff and all the reasons to make fun of them there are times when you cant help but feel sorry for them. Kourtneys boyfriend Scott is constantly messing her around and always getting into arguments with her family and Khloe has also had numerous boyfriends cheat on her and had a lot of bad press (shes been to jail and is constantly called a man because of her large build). And there is also the fact that people seem to try and sell a lot of stories about the family, with Kims ex releasing her sex tape and someone trying to sell naked photos of Kourtney to the press.
If you love the kind of reality shows like the hills, what Katie did next etc then you will probably like this aswell. The channel 4music is currently showing the 2nd series and E! has the newest season, which i think is season 4 currently playing.
One of my guilty pleasures every week is sitting down on a Sunday evening to watch the latest episode of Keeping Up With Kardashians on the E! channel on my Sky box. After a long day at work, then putting my little man to bed, I want to sit down and watch something trashy which doesn't make my tired brain work too hard and this sort of show is just the sort of thing I love. I've only started to watch this over the past few months after seeing a lot about the Kardashians online, so I decided to find out a little bit about them by watching lots of repeats of their show, and now I'm hooked!
A lot of people in the UK haven't heard of the Kardashians, but they are a family who have their fame through their TV show and various other endorsements that they do for lots of different products. Probably the most famous of the family is Kim Kardashian, a model and entrepreneur who often features in lads mags, and shot to real fame after her sex tape made it onto the internet. The rest of the family consists of eldest sister Kourtney and her baby son Mason, younger sister Khloe and her basketball player hubby Lamar, brother Rob, mum Kris Jenner and her husband, Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner, and their 2 young daughters Kendall and Kylie. The family are filmed for a huge portion of their lives, the ups and downs and this is what makes up their show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
The show began back in 2007 with a modest following, yet has grown hugely since its debut 3 years ago. The family has gotten more interest from the press due to the relationships of the 3 elder daughters, the pregnancy of eldest sister Kourtney, shock marriage of Khloe and various other things. What I love about this show is that they aren't afraid to show the bad side to their life as well, the bad relationships, the getting cheated on, family arguments and whatever else comes their way. The fourth season has just finished on E! with the birth of baby Mason, but expect a fifth season later on in the year with the next set of adventures for the guys.
The whole family talks candidly to the camera throughout the show, and I quite enjoy these bits. We see a lot of the Kardashians' lives, from their shopping trips to their business Dash (a shopping boutique) and behind the scenes there, and a whole lot else too. There are often a lot of laughs throughout the show with the girls playing up to the cameras (especially Kourtney and Khloe), Kim is very up herself regarding her career but this is often amusing to watch. I enjoy how they balance out the whole family throughout the show, giving equal time to the eldest 3 girls and their parents, with Rob and the two teenage girls not featuring anywhere near as much.
The fourth and latest season has probably been the most interesting due to the pregnancy of Kourtney and her boyfriend Scott. They've managed to make a whole series based around this, the ups and downs of their relationship and pregnancy, and its been a frank and honest look at it for which I have to credit Kourtney for. We even saw Kourtney deliver her own son which was... interesting.... so these Kardashians certainly don't hold back in front of the camera. It was a great season though, and I can see exactly what the next season is going to be about after seeing this one!
I'm not exactly sure what this family are famous for, but whatever it is, it works for them. They have their own business, Dash, in LA and in Miami, which has caused a spin off show called 'Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami', and they're shooting a second season already, with baby Mason in tow! Although it is trashy TV, there's something addictive about this show and seeing these girls do what they do. They say it isn't scripted but I have to wonder if some of the things are slightly planned for the show in advance just to create something interesting for the viewers. Either way, I enjoy watching it, seeing lovely LA on cold winter UK evenings certainly cheers me up and the Kardashians pretty much guarantee you a laugh.
This show isn't going to be most people's cup of tea, but if you like your American reality shows then do give this one a try. It's repeated throughout the day on E! with the older episodes so you can get to know the history of the family and the show, and I reckon its still got a good few years left in it yet. The family doesn't seem to mind living their lives in front of the cameras (although perhaps Bruce does!), so while they don't mind, I won't mind watching them every now and then! It's funny, enjoyable and light-hearted, there's plenty of drama, bitchiness and comedy to keep you watching, and I do recommend it.
Shown on E! and 4music.
Thank you for reading.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians is a reality entertainment show which is currently being aired on channel E! in the UK. It started in 2007 and is already on the fourth series. Like various other E! reality shows, Ryan Seacrest is the Executive Producer.
The show follows the Kardashian/Jenner family, in their day to day lives, which have to be seen to be believed! I will introduce you to the family in a moment, but first I better explain who they are and why they're are famous enough to get their own show.
Robert Kardashian was a hugely successful defence attorney, and became famous when he defended O.J Simpson in the infamous murder case. O.J Simpson had stayed in the Kardashian household at the time of the trial. Kris Kardashian was best friends with Nicole Brown Simpson, so understandably this was a difficult period in Robert and Kris' friendship. Robert and Kris were divorced in 1989, but remained good friends and Robert had very close relationships with all of their children.
Robert sadly passed away in on 30th September 2003 after a short battle with esophageal cancer. He was only 59 years old.
I will now introduce you to the cast of the show.
Kris Kardashian: Mother of all six children. She is fun loving, always on the go and enjoys the hectic lifestyle. Kris loves hanging around with her daughters and deep down wishes she was still young enough to be one of them. She owns a children's clothing store with her eldest daughter Kourtney, called Smooch. She also manages her three eldest daughter's careers, and does a good job of it!
Bruce Jenner: Bruce and Kris got married in 1991. He has helped raise Kris children from her previous marriage to Robert. They also have two daughters together. Bruce also has his own kids from his previous marriage, who sometimes make the odd guest appearance on the show. Bruce is best known for winning gold in the 1976 Olympic decathlon. All Bruce wants is a quiet life and they odd game of golf!
Kourtney Kardashian: Kourtney is the oldest sister. She is very close to her sisters, and has an on/off relationship with boyfriend Scott Disick. They have just had a baby together, which we will see all about in series four. In addition to the store she owns with her mother, she also owns fashion boutique D-A-S-H with her two sisters.
Kim Kardashian: Kim is the second eldest. She is the most famous out of the family, having been in various movies and magazines etc... She is a sex symbol to men everywhere and is best known for either her large backside (J. Lo eat your heart out!) or her sex tape with ex-boyfriend Ray J (which got leaked on to the internet). Kim is currently dating American Football player Reggie Bush.
Khloe Kardashian: Khloe is the youngest out of Kris' daughters from her first marriage. She works full time in the store she owns with her sisters D-A-S-H. Khloe has recently got married to basketball star Lamar Odom.
Rob Kardashian: Rob is Kris' only son. He admits that his sisters used to bully him when they were younger. Rob isn't in the show as much as the girls, but has had a couple of episodes focus around him.
Kendall & Kylie Jenner are Bruce and Kris' daughters; they are the youngest out of the bunch and appear in a fair few episodes. It seems as though they want to grow up to be just like their sisters.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians mainly follows Kourtney, Kim and Khloe, in their personal lives and their careers. We see anything from photo shoots to nights out partying. At least once an episode they will have an argument, but generally they all get on extremely well and are very close.
I love watching this show; it's a bit of a giggle, not to be taken seriously. In fact, I'm pretty sure that alot of the time the storylines are played up to the camera. It seems like quite often the scenes have been recreated for the cameras, although it is meant to be a reality show. They also have clips of them talking to the camera, explaining their side of the stories or narrating what we're about to see.
I don't know anyone else who watches this show, although anyone who has sat down to watch it with me has got into it, and asked me to explain who's who etc... I wouldn't recommend this programme to anyone who is easily offended, as there is foul language and lots of sexual innuendo. It's not as sleazy as I'm making it sound though; it is an entertainment show after all.
In late 2009 there was also a spin off show called Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami. It was a short series following Kourtney and Khloe moving to Miami to expand their business and open another store out there. In the last episode the girls return home to California, with the news that Kourtney is pregnant. The premise of this show is basically exactly the same as Keeping Up with the Kardashians, it just centres around Kourtney and Khole and their new adventures living on their own.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians isn't for the fainthearted, as I've said before, if you don't want to hear swearing and conversations of a controversial nature, then this isn't the show for you.
I like watching it because I'm into all my trashy American reality type programmes, they are easy to follow and don't take much brain power, and they're just a bit of fun when you want to switch off of thinking. It's a typical show for a channel like E!, all their shows are pretty much in the same vain.
If you look through what sort of television programmes I've reviewed in the past on DooYoo you'll probably find that the majority of them are American and quite a few of them fall into the fly on the wall / reality style category of programmes. I'd love to be able to say I'm going to review some controversial political show or some hard hitting drama but sadly I'm not. This review is on a programme called Keeping Up with the Kardashians and from the title alone you can probably predict what sort of programme it's going to be!
Keeping Up with the Kardashians is an American reality television series which is airing in the UK on Sky channel E Entertainment. The show documents the lives of the Kardashian / Jenner family but mainly focuses on the three eldest Kardashian sisters. The show takes the format of a fly on the wall style show with the cameras filming the Kardashian family's movements and then editing them down to the best ones. Here's a quick guide to the cast to give you an idea of who everyone is along with their somewhat tenuous claims to fame!
Kris Jenner (originally Kardashian) - this is the mother of the family, she was originally married to Robert Kardashian, a lawyer, who became famous during the O J Simpson murder trial. She divorced him back in 1989 and married the athlete Bruce Jenner and spends her time managing the careers of her three eldest daughters.
Bruce Jenner - this is the father figure of the family, he was an Olympic decathlon champion in 1976 and married Kris back in 1991 when he became stepfather to her four children (three daughters and one son). He is often depicted as the calming force in the family and certainly the more conservative of the two parents.
Kourtney Kardashian - she is the eldest of the sisters, she co-owns a boutique in California with her sisters and a clothing store with her mother.
Kim Kardashian - she is the second born daughter of Kris and Robert, she's dating NFL player Reggie Bush but is more famous for her sex tape with Ray J.
Khloe Kardashian - she is the youngest of the sisters, she is also into the clothing business but made the news following being arrested in 2007.
In addition to those characters there are a multitude of other characters that make regular appearances in the show. These include Rob Kardashian who is the only son of Kris and Robert, Kendall Jenner who is the oldest daughter of Kris and Bruce and Kylie Jenner who is the youngest daughter of Kris and Bruce. In addition Khloe's husband Lamar Odorn (LA Lakers player), Kim's boyfriend Reggie Bush (New Orleans Saints player) and Kourtney's boyfriend Scott Disick regularly make appearances in the television show.
The show began back in 2007 and is currently showing season four on E Entertainment. Since it began it seems to have grown in popularity for reasons I'm not completely clear on. The Kardashians apparently have a massive fan base now over in America although are still relatively unheard of over here in the UK. The show does seem well received here though. Each episode is thirty minutes long although by the time it starts and you take out the halfway break you'll probably find the running time is only about twenty minutes in total.
Now many of you who've made it this far may well be wondering why exactly the Kardashians are considered famous enough to have a television series made about them. Well you won't actually get an answer by watching their show but in a way you'll be helping to make them more famous. Their need for fame is almost cringe worthy, especially Kris who clearly wants to be the star of every show despite her daughters being much better looking and younger than her. Any other mother would step out of the lime light but not Kris!
The show is quite entertaining, I'm not sure how serious it is or how scripted it is but I do enjoy watching it. I watched series three and I'm now enjoying series four just as much, they do touch on some serious issues (although their outlook of them is somewhat laughable) but for the majority the show is really quite light hearted. There's a bit of backstabbing, plenty of bitchiness and equal amounts of drama which do actually make for quite a good mix. I'd imagine this is a show more popular with the younger females than males!
So would I recommend it? Well yes I would, if you've ever watched shows such as Laguna Beach or The Hills then you'll love this show. It's just got that extra something that those shows were missing in many ways. Yes many may argue that it's a sad day when people are fascinated by shows like this, shows that are essentially rubbish in many ways, but I don't care!. Thankfully they've got rid of the narration which used to be provided by Kim, just in case some viewers had suffered severe brain damage and couldn't follow what was going on!
The mystery of the Kardashian fame still remains firmly in tact, even after writing this review I've still not managed to understand it. They complain about the tabloids treatment of them ceaselessly, yet without the tabloids, they simply wouldn't be famous. It's been described as "A fun, lightweight, reality based show that emphasizes strong family bonds" and I really would agree with this. If you're looking for some mildly entertaining American viewing then look no further, the strong family bonds may even pull on a heart string among some people!
Thanks for reading.
