Advantages: Manger babies

Disadvantages: Peggy's 'Brown betty'

'King of the Hill' is a great animated sitcom from Mike Judge who brought us 'Beavis and Butthead'.It never seems to get the same recognition here as 'The Simpsons' or 'Family Guy' (both reviewed by me!) but it's now in it's fifth season and is the Fox network's top show excluding 'The X-files'.So low is it's esteem that I had to use the Dooyoo navigator to find it listed under 'kids' shows'.Well I'll tell you something boy it's not aimed at kids and it's darned funny too!.

The show concerns the trials of Hank Hill,a decent, conservative Texan who sells propane and propane accessories.Hank is a good men but has no end of trouble from his Vietnamese neighbour ("I'm Loation"),his wacky pals and his demanding son Bobby.

The shows ar'nt funny in the way 'The Simpsons' are, there is no slapstick or outragous situations. If Hank loses his job he's still unemployed next week and when his wife Peggy was paralysed she stayed that was for some time. The show is funny though in a knowing wry way that will strike a chord in most.

Hank has trouble living up to his father,Cotton who had his shins shot off in dubya dubya two and is a typical redneck.Hank trys to show Bobby a better example and dos'nt always succeed as the impressionable Bobby was happy to slap asses with the best of them, until told otherwise.Cotton calls Peggy 'Hank's wife' and they don't get along especially as Cotton traded in Hank's mom for a younger model.Peggy has her own worries in the shape of an unpublished 'musings column' and her 'Boggle' tournaments.

Most of the laughs come from Hank's buddies who drink beer with him.Best is Dale Gribble a conspiricy nut pest controller who'se too busy looking through peoples' garbage to notice his wife is having an affair with her Red Indian masseusse. Also good for a laugh is Bo
omhauer, voiced by Mike Judge as is Hank, who speaks in such a drawl that only one word in ten is recognizable.Lastly we have Bill whose lonley and fancies Peggy. His model wife was home made and he dos'nt find a bit of peeping unappealing.

Other recurring characters include the Hill's cousin and lodger Luanne who is a bad beautician and Khan the annoying neighbour who'se always putting Hank down.

This is a great show that rewards the regular viewer with character development and on going plot themes. The shows' animation and voice work are great and if you give it a try you'll be back for more.Catch it on Sky 1 and occassionally on Channel 4.
