Knightmare ... Broadsword Television production for Anglia Television/ITV, and was filmed at Anglia's Studio E in Norwich. The show made extensive use of the 'Cromakey' (blue screen) technology to generate rooms with different backgrounds and features. The adventure was set mostly in a dungeon (beneath Dunshelm Castle), of which there were three 'levels' corresponding to difficulty. Teams of four, aged 11-16, take it in turns to challenge the dungeon to complete a 'quest' - usually to retrieve a symbolic object, such as a Crown or Shield. The dungeon master 'Treguard', and his assistant occasionally helped teams along their way as they solved problems, puzzles and riddles between each room or scene. The 'dungeoneer' is the one person of the team who is guided through the adventure, and wears a helmet to blind them from reality. He or She is guided by the three other members of the team, known as their 'advisors', who sit in the dungeon ante-chamber and watch the adventure through a 'Magic Mirror'. The object of each quest was decided at the start, and teams would be awarded with a medal or trophy upon successful completion.

Treguard was no longer an impartial figure but stood by his dungeoneers as a force for good. He also harboured many of those made homeless by the war and in particular found love with his manservant Pickles. This ended in tears however when Pickles returned to the wood from whence he ... more

This show was originally broadcast over 7 years from 1987 to 1994 and followed the exploits of numerous young people as they attempted to make their way through a dungeon located under Knightmare Castle. Although the adventurers were always 'summoned' by the Dungeon Master Treguard of Dunshelme there is the suggestion that they were expecting such action as they are never completely unprepared. Just where they were summoned from is never revealed. The dungeon under Knightmare castle is hugely expansive and possible encorporates a dimension shift as it is populated by a wide variety of characters and includes some chambers which appear to be outside ...  Read the complete review

Probably my favourite kids TV programme when I was growing up back in the late 1980s and early 1990s had to be CITV's Knightmare. Knightmare was an adventure game show, based in a virtual reality castle. The idea of the game was greatly like the Dungeon and Dragons adventure books. It was played by a team of 4 children. 1 child was the dungeoneer, and had to wear the Helmet of Justice, blocking their vision except for the area immediately around them. They also had to carry a knapsack, where they could carry food to replenish their life force along the journey. The other 3 children were the guides, and they sat in front of a TV screen, guiding the ...  Read the complete review

Now, they don't make 'em like this anymore!! Every geeky 9-year-old's dream (and every University Student's fond memory!), Knightmare was, in my opinion, one of THE best kid's TV shows ever to be created. Spawned from the late 80s / early 90s, when tabletop roleplaying games were a relatively common pursuit amongst teenagers, Knightmare offered a more accessible fantasy adventure led by the loveable (if not rather harsh sometimes!) Treguard. For those unfamiliar with this excellent programme, Knightmare is based around a team of kids leading a team member designated 'dungeoneer' around the virtual reailty fantasy world that has been created. The ...  Read the complete review

Well where do I begin! For me Knightmare was the ultimate Childrens TV Show and the day it was taken off the air it was a truly sad day for me :( My brother got into trouble by my dad for watching it while doing it at the same time and never watched it again!I never missed an episode and have to admit the from the First Series to the Fourth Series were my favourite. There was many a time I would shout at the screen the answer to a riddle or which path the Dungeoneer should take because the path ahead lied with danger but as the saying went the only way is onward there is no turning back!I especially found it amusing when the Dungeonmaster Treguard used to say ...  Read the complete review

this is pure nostalgia for me! when i saw that this programme was featured on this site i felt euphoric for an instance. this programme rocked! for something shown at 4 in the afternoon it was a little scary! i remember that i loved it but cant quite remember the entire format. it appeared to be like a live computer game with a team of children contestants having to battle past evil characters or complete challenges on levels set in various settings, though if i remember correctly it was generally a medieval setting. oh and there was a wicked part where you were in castle and had to climb on a dragon to fly to the next part of the game. the most memorable bit was ...  Read the complete review
