Advantages: Unique format, tough and exciting
Disadvantages: Dated visually
Now, they don't make 'em like this anymore!! Every geeky 9-year-old's dream (and every University Student's fond memory!), Knightmare was, in my opinion, one of THE best kid's TV shows ever to be created.
Spawned from the late 80s / early 90s, when tabletop roleplaying games were a relatively common pursuit amongst teenagers, Knightmare offered a more accessible fantasy adventure led by the loveable (if not rather harsh sometimes!) Treguard.
For those unfamiliar with this excellent programme, Knightmare is based around a team of kids leading a team member designated 'dungeoneer' around the virtual reailty fantasy world that has been created. The team members have to help the dungeoneer (who can't see anything due to them wearing a huge, oversized helmet) to negotiate the pathways, puzzles and riddles awaiting them... for example "walk north 3 steps... stop!... turn east... walk 2 steps...".
The best thing about Knightmare is that it was really quite difficult. Only a handful of the teams who played were actually able to win... the rest of them either fell down pits, or were sliced up by blades, or simply ran out of time... it was quite a cutthroat game, but that just made it all the more exciting! If a team failed, a new one would come in and start the adventure again!
Watching Knightmare now, yes it does look a little bit dated. However there is no denying the appeal this programme had when it was on air, and the fondness that many have in their hearts to this day.
Overall, Knightmare was and is an excellent and truly unique programme. There's never been anything else quite like it, and if you spot it on TV at some point, make sure you catch it especially if you aren't familiar!
Summary: One of those tv shows that really stands out from the pack!

- 07/04/09 Sidestep to your left... Knightmare was sooo difficult, I really felt sorry for those kids who got all the way to level 4 then died in a really silly way like getting their left and right mixed up and falling down a virual well or something. There were no second chances in Knightmare! Fab x |
