Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County (often referred to only as "Laguna Beach") is a reality TV show documenting the lives of several affluent teenagers living in Laguna Beach, California, a wealthy community in Orange County. The show contains similar themes as the FOX hit teen drama The O.C. (hence the title). It differs from most other reality shows in that it is structured as somewhat more of a traditional narrative than a documentary.

A great insight into the real lives of kids growing up in Orange county

Laguna Beach, for those who don't know, was started as a 'reality' version of the US hit TV drama 'The OC'. MTV came up with the absolute genius idea following the success of the O.C, which was about a group of rich teenagers growing up in Newport, Orange County and decided to make a reality version following some real kids growing up in Orange County, but chose to film in Laguna Beach instead.

Series one follows a group of students at Laguna Beach high school during their senior year to see what their lives are really like. Lauren Conrad, who later went on to be the star of the Hills, Stephen Coletti and Lo Bosworth were the main characters in the group, although many other friends featured. Lauren and Stephen had been friends for years however it was clear that Lauren wanted more. Throw into the equation Stephens sophomore girlfriend Kristin Cavalarri, who not only really liked Stephen but seriously hated Lauren, and just wait for the fireworks.
Although we never get to see inside their school, the cameras follow them at home, at parties and on dates. Single cameras were taken inside the school dances and prom by a cast member for us to see clips and of course the cameras would be outside waiting to pick up all the fallout. We even got to see their eventual graduation and their tearful goodbyes as they go off to college.

This is seriously addictive stuff. It may not have as much drama as the OC being as it is based on reality, there were no drug addicts, prison sentences or suicide attempts. But the drama was absolutely brilliant, in particular the girls fights over the boys.

Season two follows Kristin and her friends who were no longer sophomores and were now in their senior year. Some new characters', and some new boys, are thrown in as well as some appearances from Stephen, Lauren and the gang when they come back from college for the holidays. This season is full of so much more drama and is possibly my favourite.
The season ends with Kristin and her friends going off to college and Lauren leaving to go to LA and start 'The Hills'.

Season 3 I haven't actually watched yet but I am abit reluctant to as none of the original cast is in it, it has moved onto a whole new year of kids. Although I may still watch it to see what happens!

Teens with rich parents living in Laguna Beach and this show follows their drama

Laguna Beach: The Real OC is the type of "reality" that makes you jealous. With the beautiful weather, people & location you can't help but wish you were in on the drama.

The first season focused on Lauren Conrad and her group of friends and enemies (Kristen Cavallari).

The second season focused on Kristen Cavallari and the drama of her group of friends, while some of the cast from season one still featured.

While season 3 had an all new group of friends, with Tessa Keller and her new drama being the focus.

The seasons followed the same kind of routine. Unrequited love, break ups, make ups, friendship fall outs, fights and anything else teens can get up to on camera.

Laguna Beach was my guilty pleasure, I liked to watch each week to see what was happening with my favourite rich teens across the pond. With this show you can't help be interested in their petty arguements and parties.

A bitchy reality drama based in California

Yesterday I posted a review about The Hills, which is the spin off from Laguna Beach so today I have decided to write one about Laguna Beach so you can see how it all started.

The idea of Laguna Beach came from the programme The OC. MTV obviously thought it would make a great programme to see how the kids in the orange County really live. Laguna Beach as the title suggests is based in Laguna Beach, California. This is a beautiful place, which my parents were lucky enough to visit recently, and said it is just like it seems on TV. The population of Laguna Beach is fairly small but it has some of the best beaches in the US.

The TV show centers around the lives of a group of teenagers in their day to day life, from school to relationships. All of these teenagers come from very privalidged backgrounds and live the high life. They live in massive houses with pools and the sea a stones throw away.

In series one Lauren Conrad (who goes on to star in The Hills), is good friends with Stephen. Stephen is dating Krirstin, who Lauren does not like at all. Lauren and Stephen have an on/off relationship when he is not dating Krirstin. The series focuses around the different characters relationships and culminates in some of the characters leaving for college including Stephen.

Series 2 sees Kristin and her little group of friends including Alex H and Jessica rivaling another group of girls Alex M and taylor. This is made even worse by the fact that badboy Jason is dating a girl from each group. Lauren also ends up coming back after not getting on well at college.

Series 3 sees another new group of characters including Tessa and her friend Rocky. They again have rivals in another group of girls Kyndra, Cami and Nikki. Again there is the usual conflict between these groups, usually involving the opposite sex.

The programme is supposedly real although much of it does seem very staged. This does not take away from it though, as I still enjoy it as I would a drama on TV. The characters are fun, with a lot of bitchiness which adds to the drama. The surroundings make you very jealous as you wish you lived there too. It also makes it a bit more interesting than a drama set in a boring town somewhere.

The programme used to be shown quite often on MTV but is quite old now so you are more likely to catch it on MTV R. You can also buy each series on DVD.

If you are a fan of reality programmes and like a bit of bitchiness, then I would suggest you watch.

A review on the TV reality show Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach is a fairly unheard of show over in the UK, mainly because it’s a USA based show that has only recently been screened in the UK. It’s also shown on MTV and so is only available to those of you with Sky or Cable, although I can already tell it’ll soon make a regular move to Channel 4. The show is currently airing its third series in the USA but only the second series in the UK which is the one that I intend to base this review on.

It’s a fly on the wall type reality show which follows the lives of eight teenagers from the wealthy area of Laguna Beach which is located is Orange County, America. The same place is also home to the popular TV show The OC and the Laguna Beach show has even been marketed as “the real OC.” In my opinion this is an exact generalisation of the show; the teenagers featured in it are both beautiful and rich, part of an elite group of high school students who appear to lead a fabulous life. The cameras follow the teenagers through their general lives, watching how they grow up and change but more importantly the friends, enemies and lovers they make along the way.

The cast consists of eight main teenagers although other characters make an appearance throughout the series so it’s not just based on following a small clique. The characters are what makes the show so watch-able, just like any other teenagers they’re bitching, competing with each other, cat fighting, etc. So here’s a quick run down, just to let you know what you’re getting yourself into if you choose to watch the show…

Stephen is a Laguna Beach boy who has the hearts of two girls, his ex girlfriend Kristin and his long term follower Lauren/LC. Kristin is your typical golden girl and the show’s leader in a sense with many guys after her. Lauren/LC is one of her arch enemies due to the feud they still have about Stephen. That’s not the only feud… Laguna Beach’s very own bad boy went out with harmless and sweet Jessica, cheated on her with Alex M (there’s another set of enemies for you) and then tried it back on with Jessica! Meanwhile Taylor (Alex M’s best friend) is another enemy of Kristin’s due to them feud about local boy Talan. And that about sums it up, 5 very beautiful girls and 3 very handsome boys – a reciepe for mayhem surely!

Although the cast are of course aware that they are being filmed they don’t make a conscious effort to be entertaining nor do they play up to the camera unlike shows such as Big Brother. It’s as if they’re so used to being followed by a camera it becomes second nature to them to act as if the cameras were not there which is refreshing as it allows you to see them in their own natural everyday life.

So what do I think of the show? It’s addictive – whether this is a good point or not I’ll leave for you to decide! I first discovered Laguna Beach about a month ago and since then I’ve made sure I haven’t missed a single show. If you do miss one you can easily loose the plot of who hates who, who fancies who and who is going out with who! They have the ideal life which is based on hanging out, shopping, sun bathing and going out – who wouldn’t get caught up in it! The pace of the show is fast, due to each episode being quite short the producers have to cram in a lot of events, each show is based on a week in the life of the Laguna Beach crowed and so you can imagine that the producers have a selection of events they can choose to edit and include. As such there’s never a dull moment and all the clips shown are vital!

However as with everything there’s always a downside, sadly each show is only approximately 20 minutes long which in my opinion is far too short! It’s one of those programmes that you’ll easily get wrapped up in and just want it to continue on and on. I think they could easily show an hour of this each week and keep viewers hooked – it’s addictive viewing the fact that for those 20 minutes you get to immerse yourself in another community and even the lives of the teenagers followed in it. It just leaves you wanting more and I always feel that you miss important bits of what’s going on by the show being cut so short.

It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea really, for those of you that can’t stand shows such as The OC, One Tree Hill and Sex in the City then you’re really not going to find this good viewing by any means. Even I’ll admit that it is rubbish, it’s not educational and it’s by no means educational. However it is entertaining if you like your reality style TV shows.

The show is shown on a Sunday night at 7pm on MTV – but be warned, you will get addicted!

        Thanks for reading.
