Joan Sims (1930-2001) died on Wednesday 27th June aged 71. She was one of my favourite actresses, as I am a big fan of the Carry On films and have been since I was a young child in the 1970s. The Last Of The Blonde Bombshells was her last professional acting role. She was just as brilliant as ever and will be sadly missed... For the first time in a long while, the BBC produced a drama that was funny, entertaining musically as well as in a comedy sense and with a superb cast. It wasn't just a story about tracking down previous members of a wartime swing band, but also about attitudes to age, how you see yourself, and making a new start after the loss of a partner. There was also the touching relationship between a grandmother (Judi Dench's character Elizabeth) and her granddaughter. The last of the blonde bombshells TV drama BBC 1 Having been weaned with the big band sound ,with rock and roll in my teens ,I could appreciate these two eras being compared in this drama. The big band sound helped people live through the war . I thought the acters that starred in this play were superb . Judi Dench, Leslie Carron to mention two .
