Advantages: cleggy & truelove, howard & barry, jokes

Disadvantages: less of cleggy & truelove

I think watching Last of the Summer Wine has been a silent rule in my house, that every Sunday, just around tea time it has to be watched. Not that I am complaining about this. It brings me back to an age of nostalga (?). Ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper I think I've watched it. The format hasn't changed and so what if the jokes are pretty much the same week in week out, there's nothing wrong with simple humour.

It's very first episode appeared in 1973, which just says something about the style of it. Like they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Would you believe it, right now it is into it's 30th series, although last year it was suggested that this would be its last.

We've seen characters come and go, whether through their death-Bill Owen (Compo) and Kathy Staff (Nora Batty), ill health Stephen Lewis (Smiler) or just left, Keith Clifford (Robin Hood man!) Throughout it though, the creators have kept to the trio of 3 elderly men going through life in a slightly odd way and having many a mishap. Sadly, probably due to their age, Peter Sallis who plays Cleggy and Frank Thornton as Truelove, have decreased in viewing time. In tonights episode, for instance, I'd guess that they werer on the screen for no more than 20 seconds, if that. It's a shame because they were always my favourite!

The trio, having basically no wives or children, experience their second childhood and what with the reasonably new 2 plodding policeman, who are pretty rubbish at their jobs it gives a family set up for people to watch without having anything offensive being put in.

You still have Howard and Marina, the trio, and the ladies having their chats whilst drinking tea and coffee and how could you forget slightly wimpy Barry!

Many people have thought that it's well past it's sell by date but I strongly disagreee. Sometimes you just need a bit of gentle, obvious humour to watch and it's not as if it's on at prime time. It's a nice way of starting off Sunday night telly at the early time of approximately 6:30.
