Advantages: Good plots
Disadvantages: Not compulsive viewing
Law and Order is one of those shows that can be lumped together with the likes of CSI or Numb3rs, 50 minute crime based shows where all of the people involved on the side of the law are quite good looking or very distinguished if they are past a certain age. This one is based in New York.
Each episode in Law and Order follows a case from both sides of the prosecution side so the initial investigation and arrest is shown and then the prosecutors take centre stage as the case is bought to trial. In Law and Order probably more of the show is ficused on the attempts to get a conviction and the legal horse trading that takes place in the American system where defendants can enter plea bargains.
This is an entertaining show, not one that is addictive viewing for me, it can be found mostly on Channel Five and also a couple of cable channels carry it. There have aso been a few spin off versions as well.
My favourite character in the show has to be Detective Lennie Briscoe played by Jerry Orback who plays a street wise tough cop while the star of the legal team is Jack McCoy played by Sam Waterston who is excellent as the lead prosecutor whosometimes struggles with the need to cut deals.
This is an entertaining show with some good performances, I like the structure that is used as you get to see the case from two slightly different sides, the plots are varied and interesting and while some of the subject matter can be quite edgy there is the occasional light moment however these are quite rare and just like real life it is not always the case that the guilty get convicted.
Summary: Crime drama
