Advantages: Lots of twists, plots, intrigue etc.
Disadvantages: Can not really think of any
The original Law and Order and its two sister programs, Law and Order SVU (Special Victim's Unit) and Law and Order Criminal Intent are really good TV shows, as far as I am concerned. All three of the above are well thought out and well put together for captivating viewing.
Something that always amazes me about really good shows, like the above, is how "believable" the actors are in the roles they play. For me, the latter is one of the biggest factors in a good TV show, and it just simply proves that the people who are responsible for finding the right person for the job, are truly professionals in their field. If one think about it, there must be quite a number of good actors applying for these jobs, but it is so clear to me that only those who perfectly fit the specific profiles these, often, behind the scenes professionals, are looking for, will get the job in the end.
All three shows takes place in The Big Apple and deals with the New York Police Force's attempts to make good solid cases against the accused, so that the latter can be successfully prosecuted in the criminal courts. In the case of the original Law and Order the show allocates more or less equal time to the work of the two divisions responsible for successfull prosecution of the offenders, namely the Police and the office of the State Prosecutor, while the other two shows allocate much more time to the work of the Police than that of the latter office.
Of the tree Law and Order shows, my favourite is L & O Criminal Intent, where the lead actor, Goren, plays his role magnificiently. When the show was first advertized here in South Africa, the latter was shown in one of his, by now, famous poses with the added caption . . . "He sees things . . . ", by implication, which no one else can see, pasted over the TV screen, to accompany it.
When you watch the actual shows, you can see how the latter is true in the way this gifted detective of the New York Major Crime Squad goes about his daily business. Very soon after he first begins his investigation of the next crime, he already knows who the guilty party is. From this point onwards it is pretty much only a question of convincing his partner, his superior in the Major Crime Squad and the prosecuting attorney of . . . "this knowledge of his", and once they are convinced, they all work together to entrap the guity party.
Be warned, however . . . it is intense and fast moving. If you are already half asleep at the beginning of the show, you will simply not follow the story, and will most likely wake up some time after the show had ended already, feeling really disappointed and cheated. I know . . . it has happened to me a couple of times already!
In summation . . . All three these Law and Order shows are well worth the time you may spend to watch them. None of them will disappoint you at all . . . Law and Order and Law and Order SVU I will give a rating of 8/10, but Law and Order Criminal Intent gets a 9/10 from me, for the Goren factor, who makes this particular version of the show something extra-ordinary.
Thank you for reading this review.
