Advantages: Very funny
Disadvantages: none
I bought series two on video for my boyfriend at Christmas, because he was always going on about it and how funny it is. I thought I would watch one episode with my BF to see what all the fuss was about, I really didn’t think it was my “cup of tea”. Anyway I ended up watching all 6 episodes. It is actually very funny (my BF was shocked to hear me say that), silly, sick and warped but very funny. I liked it so much that I bought the first series from amazon for £14.00. ~~~~~~ The League of Gentlemen is filmed in Hatfield, Derbyshire – better known to us Royston Vasey, named after the comedian Chubby Brown (he appears in two episodes in series two as the Mayor). The program is written by Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith (who play all the residents who live in this strange little town) - Jeremy Dyson also co-writes the series with the other three. The four have been awarded Perrier Award Sony Silver Award Golden Rose Award Best Entertainment Award at the Royal Society TV Awards BAFTA for the Best Comedy Series. ** The characters ** Edward and Tubbs (Tatsyrup) They own the local shop. They have a problem with customers who are not from Ryston Vasey (“local”). They are husband and wife but also brother and sister. They have one son, David, who Edward is deeply ashamed of. This couple may look harmless but kill “unlocal” people and also kidnap people to be their son's friend. ~~~~ The Denton family (Harvey, Val, their twin daughters Chloe, Radclyffe and their nephew Benjamin.) Harvey and Val Harvey and his wife Val are an odd couple. Harvey has an alarming passion for toads. They are obsessed with cleanliness and have a lot of strange house rules (taught to their guests in rhymes and songs.) Masturbation is strictly forbidden
in their house. As well as rules they have many strange habits. Benjamin He is meeting a friend to go hill walking and originally intends to stay for one night with Auntie Val but after his friend, Martin Lee mysteriously disappears he is forced to stay a further 6 weeks. Chloe and Radclyffe (Megan and Rosy DeWolf) The innocent looking twins are really evil. They appear out of nowhere (often scaring people by doing so.) They also have a spooky habit of reading people's minds. ~~~~~ Barbara Dickson Barbara is the proprietor of “Bab’s Cabs” and drives a pink taxi. Is a transsexual (pre in series one.) Barbara is on a manhunt and searching for true love. The sex change goes wrong and is performed by the vet. ~~~~~ Hilary Briss He is the creepy butcher and sells his “special stuff” (a highly addictive foodstuff) to his special customers. He is married to Mrs Briss (her identity is not revealed until the end of series two) Samuel A councillor in Royston Vasey who buys the special stuff even though he knows it is wrong, but it tastes so good he can't resist. Morris A mayor in Royston Vasey, who makes the mistake of bringing his family to one of Hilary's meetings and also allowing his wife to sell the special stuff in sandwiches at her stall. He needs some persuading to try the special stuff but once he's tried some he’s hooked. ~~~~ Pauline, Mickey and Ross (can all to be found down the job centre.) Pauline Pauline is the horrible restart officer who believes that all jobseekers are worthless and pathetic. She has an obsession for pens and stores them in a box marked “Pauline’s pens”. She hates Ross. Mickey The mentally challenged jobseeker (he thinks the capital of France is Wine.) He thinks Pauline is absolutely wonderful and would do anything f
or her. He misses out on his chance to be a firemen because Pauline won't let him go to his interview. Ross He is a class-mate (or that’s what we’re led to believe – he actually works for social services, internal investigations and his report says Pauline is a 'psychotic, 50yr old lesbian'.) He enjoys making Pauline seem stupid by using long words to confuse her. Cathy Carter Smith She appears in series two as Pauline’s re-placement. ~~~~ Geoff, Mike and Brian all work at the plastics factory. Geoff His wife left him for Brian. He was in the TA's but couldn't join the army because he was too fat. He is jealous of Mike and hates Brian. Mike Mike has been friends with Geoff since they were kids. He is married to Cheryl. He is almost killed by Geoff when they get lost in the woods. Brian Mike and Geoff's forgetful friend. He stops Mike from being killed by Geoff and is also threatened by Geoff at Mikes wedding because Katie left Geoff for him. ~~~~ Mr Chinnery Royston Vasey's mild mannered vet. All of his patients die in the most bizarre of ways (he doesn't mean to, but he always manages to have some “rather upsetting news” by the time he‘s finished with the patient.) He also aided in the crisis of the beast of Royston Vasey, by performing an autopsy. He also preformed Barbara's unsuccessful sex change operation. ~~~~ Iris works for her posh employer Mrs Levenson. Iris Krill Iris works for Mrs Levenson doing anything that needs doing round the house. She is frequently put down by her slobby employer but sometimes she gets her own back by insulting Judee as well. She also works on the tills at the local supermarket. She is married to Ron and has 10 children. She lives on a grotty estate in an overcrowded house that is i
n a terrible condition. She steals drink from her employer and burns her expensive nightie. She likes to embarrass her employer with vulgar details of her private life. Judee Levenson Posh lady who is constantly going on holiday with her 'husband' Eddie. (she is in denial about Eddie's death and pretends that he is still alive.) She frequently flaunts the fact she has more money than Iris and treats her like a slave. On her visit to Iris's she runs away disgusted by the conditions. She seems to have an ongoing competition with Iris to see who can upset each other the most, at last count the score was three all. ~~~~ Herr Lipp He is a German exchange teacher who would like to exchange more than just language with his male students. Papa Lazarou A wild gypsy showman, he looks a bit like a black and white minstrel. He is the boss of a sinister circus and he decides to bring them to town. He collects rings. ~~~~ The league of Gentlemen is like comedy sketch show with a story. The actors play a wide range of very different characters and in my opinion they are all very talented guys. The league of gentlemen can be seen on uk play - Thursdays at 21.50. Series three is on its way :-)

- 24/04/02 I love this show, the Christmas Special took the series to a whole new level although the Mary Whitehouse brigade complained vigorously as usual. Good op, thanks. Brett. |
