The first time that I saw Local Heroes his appearance had me reaching for the remote control, which fortunately had fallen to the floor and I was unable to get at it until the programme had grabbed my attention. Had I been able to grab the zapper I would have missed a truly brilliant half hour which never seemed to be long enough. Local Heroes is an unlikely contender for the "grab you and keep you interested" accolade but that's exactly what it does. Professor Adam Hart-Davies is an even unlikelier presenter as he appears dressed in fluorescent pink and yellow clothing riding a bicycle, often with a two wheeled trailer. Which reminds me. Why does he and other cyclists that you see on the road, pedal furiously in low gear getting nowhere fast when it would be much more energy efficient to go up a gear or two and get somewhere quicker or with less effort? This is a terrifically produced and desighned educational programme for adults and children alike. It brings the wonders of science, chemistry, physics and inventions to the willing public in the form of a man cycling around Britain on a fluorescent pushbike and trailer. Adam Hart-Davies is a professor with a knack to enthrall and keep people interested in inventions and there history. He travels to places around Britain with tremendous courage on a pushbike dressed in Fluorescent pink and yellow tracksuit or cycling shorts.
