Location Location Location
Advantages: Informative with great presenters
Disadvantages: If you're not interested in homes and property, you'll hate it!
Location Location Location has been running since 2001 on Channel 4, which is almost hard to believe, but then it is also hard to remember a Channel 4 schedule without it. Another contradiction is that it is seen by some as a instigator of the property price explosion (mainly in a negative way) but also just a response to it!
Initially it ran for 30 minutes an episode, but this was extended to 60 minute episodes in recent years as its popularity exploded. Essentially, it follows two couples as they look for a new home in two different areas and with two different desires and requirements. The hosts Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer are meant to help them through this and this is where the fun begins.
Phil is an easy going, charming sort whilst Kirstie is a whirlwind of energy and feistiness who tells the couples exactly what she thinks, particularly if their expectations and demands are not met by their budgets. She also has the nickname "basher Allsopp" due to her proclivity for suggesting walls that could be knocked down during viewings.
The show has featured locations all over England and Scotland and wide variety of properties. What has been nice in the last couple of years is that per show they will generally feature one well-off couple looking for the perfect home up against a couple who are far lower down on the property ladder. That said, some of the demands of those featured, particularly those on the wealthier end are quite infuriating - especially when even a lot will not go a particularly long way.
I think that this is a useful programme for just about any aspiring or current homeowner. When my husband and I bought our first home not that long ago, I felt that we went into it with our eyes fully open and relatively well informed. It really is amazing what you pick up from it. But also, its good if you have an interest in homes and are just really nosy!
Alsopp and Spencer are fantastic together, pitching it just right between informative and lecturing. They also have a great sense of fun about them.
Currently shown on Channel 4 and repeated on More 4 pretty much constantly. The show also has a couple of spin-off shows - a yearly rundown of the best places to live in Britain, and Relocation, Relocation - generally featuring couples who want to buy two properties in quite diverse places - even in Europe.
In conclusion, this is a very interesting show, probably not to all taste but presents information regarding property in a indulgent and informative way.
Summary: Very watchable
