Advantages: Great storyline set up, interesting characters brilliantly portrayed
Disadvantages: There arent enough episodes?
There are two types of people, those who give up and those who have faith. Lost is for those who have faith, for to watch it you need faith, faith that, in six years time, you will have been given the best story ride of your life. With every new question that appears there is an answer, an explanation, but as real Lost fans have found out the hard way, it takes time.
So if you have patience, faith and an inquisitive nature, look no further than Lost. For what starts out as a survivor story about the remnants of a plane crash on a tropical island has evolved into the most imaginative and unique storyline ever seen (in my opinion of course!) in a TV Show. Where anything is possible, the very first episode ends with the first of many questions - where are they?
The first season starts us off on this mystery with steady progression and rock solid character building leading us towards a painstaking cliffhanger leaving us hungry for more...season 2 anyone?
Here is a brief introduction to some of the main characters...
Jack Shepherd
The main guy. The good guy. But in my opinion, the boring guy. From season 1 it was all about Jack, the show actually started with a zoom out out of his dazed eye. From this scene it showed the story of him rescuing and helping as many people as he could. From day 1 he was leader of this mixed bunch. As the seasons progress we see him struggle with his reluctant leadership and ironically find him fighting for it towards the end. Forcing his reason onto people and refusing to accept the mysterious island for what it is, he went down in my books for being predictable and, in all honesty, an annoyance. He is very necessary to the show, a voice of reason if anything, but this show is about the unexplained and the mysterious, he is none of these. His past consists of him being a doctor but forever ovrshadowed by his father, also a doctor. He is on the plane because his dad has died and he is flying his body back to LA.
John Locke
John is the anti-Jack, he is a man of faith and the first to realise that this island is a special place. How does he know that? Well prior to the crash he was disabled and in a wheel chair, post plane crash he is able to walk again! He is also the survivor's chief hunter and on his many expeditions he slowly gets to know the island better. His relationship with others is volatile as he rarely explains himself or his strange out-of-the-ordinary behaviour, this results in the other survivors becoming quite suspicious of him. He was on the plane after being turned down for a walkabout in the Australian outback (because of his disability).
Sawyer Ford (real name James Ford)
My personal favourite, his nicknames, sayings and comments are part of the show's image. Crash landing on the island as the typical cliched bad boy 'dont wanna help anyone but me' kind a guy who has eventually fallen in love over the seasons and mellowed. His reluctant new caring attitude is tested from time to time but it is clear that he is a favourite of the writers. Brilliant casting in Josh Holloway who blatently 'is' this character. It is reported that, when auditioning for the role, he fluffed his lines and, in anger, kicked his chair across the room. The writers loved this and he got the role immediately with an added bad boy twist to his character. His story is that he is a con man, set on his path by the death of his mother and father when he was young by another con man. His quest for revenge still hasn't been fufilled. He is on the plane, being extradited from Australia.
Kate Austen
Kate is the main girl, caught in a love triangle between Jack and Sawyer. Jack and her get along straight away from episode 1 with their first meeting involved Kat stitching him up. Sawyer, rather backwardly romances her with his wit and stubborn pride but also with a hidden sensitive nature. He also benefits from any Jack and Kate disagreement. To be honest I find her rather annoying in how she plays them off eachother, intentionally or not she plays a very argumentative character. Kate's story is that she is on the run after killing her wife-beating step father. She is on the plane after eventually being caught after years by a persistent US Marshall who is bringing her back to the US for trial.
Sun and Jin Kwon
Sun and Jin start off as an unsual couple from Korea. From the start Jin is very over-protective of his wife Sun and it soon becomes clear that Sun is very unhappy in this marriage and was actually planning to leave Jin after having an affair before the doomed flight 815. Slowly their differences are settled because they have no choice but to face them. The viewer slowly grows affectionate of each person and the gradual reclaimation of love between the two is something very beautiful. They are both on the flight with the hope of fleeing Sun's powerful and controlling father who is literally trying to use Jin as an assassin.
Michael and Walt
Another odd pairing but once their story is told all is understood. A father and son story brilliantly played out with Michael as the struggling protective and paranoid dad and Walt as the quiet but inquisitive son. Because of divorce, Michael has barely seen his son grow up after his ex-wife took Walt away from him to Sydney. However circumstances change when Walt's mother sadly dies leaving Michael to come and collect him and take him back to the US. This is a story of Michael's struggle to learn fatherhood very quickly after being thrown in the deep end.
Hurley
The fan's favourite, and its easy to see why. Hurley is a guy who has had tremendous bad luck since winning the lottery ironically enough, this bad luck includes the disappearance of his father, the death of his grandfather, the destruction of his beloved Mr Clucks Chicken Restauarant and so on... The cuddly comedy relief hasn't really had many important parts or missions as the others have but he' been involved, at least, in most storylines. Never a leader, normally a spectator he is this show through and through. Many people are theorizing him to be the main component towards the end with him being purposely portrayed as unimportant and insignificant which would fit in nicely with the irony of the show...we will see...
Summary: Watch this if you enjoy complex mysteries but be patient, dont expect the answers immediately
