This program is one of my Favourites of all time!. Set in the wonderful Oahu, Hawaii. which is a beautiful idealic setting. I fell in love with the gorgeous backdrops and scenery in this show. It has made me always want to go to Hawaii - something that I have yet to do but theirs always time!
Magnum was created by Donald P. Bellisario & Glen A. Larson which is quite a combination. Bellisario is responsible for such Juggernauts as the original Battlestar Galactica, Airwolf, Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS. Larson was involved in the development of The Six Million Dollar Man, Battlestar Galactica, Galactica 1980, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Fall Guy & Knight Rider.
The show centres around Thomas Sullivan Magnum (played by 80's pin up Tom Selleck You might remember him as "Richard" Monica's older boyfriend in FRIENDS). Magnum is a former Navy Seal & Vietnam Vet who upon returning from the conflict settled on the island with some of his former comrades Rick (Larry Manetti) and TC (Roger E Mosley). TC was a pilot in the war and runs his "Island Hopper" chopper service on the islands, Rick runs the King Kamehameha Club.
Magnum has now set himself up as a Private Investigator on the Island and works just about any case that comes his way. He stays in the 'guest house' of a beachfront estate, known as Robin's Nest, Which is owned by the never seen Robin Master's. The estate is run by Jonathan Quayle Higgins III with whom Magnum regularly butts heads over the use of the other amenities in the estate and of course the Ferrari 308 GTS.
Ah the Ferrari 308 GTS - red of course, This car was actually probably my favourite thing about the show, If ever I was fortunate enough to have the money I wouldn't just buy any Ferrari but the version used in the Series with the open top roof, the cream interior it was just magnificent!.
Magnum covered some light hearted issues as well as some very powerful storylines (there are quite a lot of Vietnam Flashbacks etc). The show had a current of humour running through it and all the characters were extremely likeable. They had complex relationships but when it came to it they would always be there for each other when it mattered. The show itself featured a cross over with "murder she wrote" with Angela Lansbury as the irrepressible Jessica Fletcher. Her and Magnum continually trying to out-sleuth each other was very entertaining.
In the Later Series we find out that Magnum is actually a father, had previously been married etc. So there is a rich tapestry of back story which is tapped into. The cliff-hanger end of one series actually shows Magnum walking toward the Pearly Gates of Heaven after being injured. We hear Higgins Bellowing after him "MAGNUM" come back here this instant. Magnum turns flashes his smile and then continues on toward the gates of heaven.
I don't want to give too much away but this show is well worth a watch, granted it is oozing with 80s style but that makes it charming not dated. The show ran for 8 Seasons each of which had now been made available to purchase on DVD. I recommend you go out and grab a few seasons sit back relax and enjoy the far away places, exotic locations, murder, mystery, Action and mayhem. Series 1 can be bought for £11.85 from "The Hut". As soon as you hear the great intro music (which I have as a ringtone BTW!) you will know your in for something special.
I actually want to go out and buy it myself now after the memories came flooding back while writing this review!.
Highly recommend.
