Maid Marian and Her Merry MenNewest Review: ... kids,' mainly because it is a historical comedy and stars Tony Robinson (who also wrote it) who played Blackadder's dogsbody, Baldrick. However, as it's a kids show, the jokes are far more obvious, more slapstick and lacking in sexual/violent content (obviously). Saying that, there did seem to be a lot of double entendreus and subtle adult humour hiding amongst the gags, and perhaps that's what made this show so funny, the fact that it never treated the child it was aimed at as a child like so many kids TV shows unfortunately do. The premise was that it was acatually Maid Marian (played by Kate Loneghan who I quite fancied on the second wa... more |

Yes I admit I have been reliving my youth recently as I acquired the whole darn boxset for this remarkable BBC children's series. And what a treat it was! I always remeber this show being one of the greatest and funniest shows for children and rewatching it brought back memories of youthful innocence and tea and toast after school on a Thursday afternoon. For those who don't know this show, it could be described loosely as 'Blackadder for kids,' mainly because it is a historical comedy and stars Tony Robinson (who also wrote it) who played Blackadder's dogsbody, Baldrick. However, as it's a kids show, the jokes are far more obvious, more slapstick and lacking ... Read the complete review

In a list of my all time favourite childrens TV shows Maid Marian and her Merry Men has got to be up at the top. It is probably joint top with Dangermouse. The idea of the show is simple, take a well known legendary story and add a twist. Make the usual hero a vain, clumsy fool and turn the leading lady into the leader. The shows script is expertly written by Tony 'Baldrick' Robinson so that people of all ages can enjoy it. When it was first shown I was only about nine or ten and I loved it and now the repeats are on I still find myself laughing out load at the jokes. Although Robin and Marian are considered to be the main characters the ... Read the complete review

I saw first MMAHMM on video which my brother and sister had. That was it I was hooked. So I was really glad to see that it had come back to CBBC. Maid Marian leads the gang and Robin is this great wimp who makes underwear for King John. Tony Robinson writes this brilliant show and even though it is classed for children there is some stuff in it that older people would get but kids wouldn't. I love this show and try to watch it everytime it's on. The only thing is that the re-runs will come to an end. Why on earth did they stop it? If you want to see it it's on Fridays at five on beeb1. ... Read the complete review

The Tony Robinson written 'Maid Marian' is one of the best kids TV shows of all time, and the decision to show all of the repeats this Summer on Friday afternoons (BBC1) can only be applauded. The series is a comedy based upon the antics of a set of (dramatised) historical characters. Robin of Sherwood is not the hero history made him out to be, but instead, a self-conscious wimp. It is in fact Marian (Kate Lonegran) who masterminds the Merry Men's strategy to defeat evil tyrant King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robinson). As well as Marian and Robin, the band of Merry Men includes the Rastafarian rapper Barrington (Danny ... Read the complete review

Maid Marian and Merry Men can be summed up in two words: laughter galore. It's just a shame that this is screened while most adults are coming home from work as this is a masterpiece of childrens' television. Written by Tony Robinson (often known for his hilarious role as Baldrick in 'Blackadder'), who also stars as the Sheriff of Nottingham, the show follows Maid Marian (the show's only let-down) and her loyal band of followers including a daft Robin Hood who thinks of himself in the best way possible and a dwarf (Little John), through Sherwood forest, stopping and solving everyday problems in those days gone by. They are ... Read the complete review
