Advantages: A good show, more realistic than other similar shows

Disadvantages: cluttered, slightly unrealistic voting system

Make me a supermodel is a TV programme that aims to make one out of a group a supermodel. This reality TV show is simlar to America's Next Top Model, but casts both male and female models. Originally started in the UK, but other countries such as the US and Australia have taken the idea and made their own show as well.

I will be talking about the American version.

~~~THE CONTESTANTS~~~
The contestants vary greatly... First of all, as i mentioned before, it is a competition for both male and female, so there is already great variation as the modelling industry is vast. They come from all over the US, and after auditions, i feel that they DO select very individual people with special characteristics they want to clash or compliment, put them together and see what happens.

~~~SHOW LAYOUT OR FORMAT~~~
After auditions, the show starts with a photo challenge, then a runway teach, and usually ends with the runway walk and the judging, as well as who is in the vote, then the next episode will start with elimination before the photo challenge and so on...

The photo challenges has been surprisingly original and unique... Whilst some elements are very typical of any modelling show: using snakes, going underwater etc, for the most part, I felt the show was quite original in their thinking. Also, the clothes were very edgy and high fashion. One criticism is that it is very difficult for both male and female models to do the same thing, unless its a group shot, which was evident as there were so many group shots!

The catwalk just before judging is a bit random as the judges are the only audience apart from the viewers at home obviously... it seems silly having one there, but i guess its good that their walk is being critiqued every week. However, different outfits have different styles and the walks were very different every week... some contestants were consistantly good, whilst others just didnt know what to do.

Overall, there seems to be alot of different things shoved into one episode, and it pains me to even think about everything: Elimination, photo challenge, house tension sequences, phone calls home, weekly teach, runway walk, possible dinner outing, and judging...

There lacks fluency and sometimes feels too crammed. However, the fact that so much goes on, does reflect the teaching quality.

~~~TEACHING QUALITY~~~
I feel that this show perhaps teaches the models how to improve slightly more than others. Firstly, the sheer amount of practise they get is going to be such a boost for them. They are also told straight to their face what they have to do better and so on.

They have special runway coach and they get lots of feedback which is beneficial, and i think this will ultimately help the models. However, not too much change was seen after the critiques, perhaps the model has it already and is not due to the teach that made an improvement, but the teach is there, how the model reacts or improves is up to them.

~~~JUDGES~~~
The judes feel very down to earth and approachable which is necessary, and they give honest opinions.. Whilst some judges are more significant than others, they are all there with an aim to cast the best model.

At judging, they do give their honest opinion which is important. However, one criticism about judging or the show is that they cast their decision on who is in the vote based on who did the worst that week, opposed to their overall consistancy and so on, which was annoying, and perhaps unrealistic.

~~~PRIZE~~~
The prize is $100,000 and a contract with New York model management, and a spread in GQ magazine. However, many contestants who leave the show also get a New York Model Mangament contract!!! So winning isn't everything.

~~~REALISM~~~
This show is slightly more real than ANTM, but it is ultimately a reality TV show, and that is evident. The editing makes certain contestants one way or another... there was a LOT of nude modelling, which is partially real, but a part of me suspects its MORE likely there for viewers.

And talking of viewers, the decision of who stays and who goes is up to viewers at home. The winner is also entirely up to the viewers at home, so technically, to win, all you have to do is please the American public- which is slightly unrealistic.

~~~VOTING SYSTEM~~~
People phone or vote online for the three who are placed in the bottom and are up for the vote. There is a time limit and once its over votes are counted and the contestant will be eliminated at the start of the show.

Most of the time the public votes for the right person which is great! And I feel they voted correctly for the winner as well... Unlike ANTM, i actually wanted this person to win and they did!!

~~~ENJOYMENT LEVEL~~~
I think the show is enjoyable, and perhaps its the first season, thats why theres not much hype over it... and it still feels a little low budget, and the excitement isn't there. Perhaps some more bitchy comments, or more outrageous contestants will poke the fire a little... and maybe clear up the show format for a less cluttered feel...

It is enjoyable, but not AS enjoyable as ANTM.

~~~OVERALL FEELING~~~
It is a good show, slightly more realistic perhaps than ANTM, but lacks the excitement and energy... it is a trashy reality tv show, and not to be taken too seriously! A good relaxing programme to watch and then forget about it...

I guess I'll have to watch season 2 now!
