Advantages: Steve
Disadvantages: Jefferson
Al Bundy, shoe salesman, father and perhaps most obviously loser. This show ran for years and sadly a la Seinfeld never got much recognition here. On casual viewing you may be forgiven for thinking this is arun of the mill sitcom with a nuclear family with a sofa facing away from the rest of the room. The difference is that there's no apple pie and humerous misunderstandings here, what you get is a damning inditement of what it is to be "Married with children". Al is married to Peggy who'se working day involves watching Oprah and filing her nails. The closest thing Al gets to a cooked dinner is the odd M&M found under the sofa. They have two kids Kelly and Bud.Kelly is dumb but gorgeous and is the high school slut.Bud is smart but short and if he's not looking at the latest issue of "Boudoire"he's peeping at his sister and her latest beau. The humour is razor sharp and usually involves the slagging of the mother in law (Mrs Wanker)who is never seen but often heard from several states away.Scenes are often set in Gary's shoes were Al works and he alternatley drools or berates the customers depending on their shoe or hoof size. The vintage episodes i remember all involve the Bundys' neighbours Steve and Marcey.Later on Steve left and Marcey remarried to Jefferson and sadly the show went downhill.Don't even mention when new arrival Seven arrived.Yup can't beat the old ones!. Choicest episode for me was when Al returned a libary book 20 years late and met up with the harridan librarian who terrorised his youth.Much of the episode was in flashback and it was nice to see junior Al sticking his hand down his trousers just as he would all those years later. One for the nostalgia files!

- 26/10/00 This was required viewing in my house, in fact half the neighbourood used to descend on me for a few beers and a belly laugh,(but mostly to drool over Kelly). MWC was the forerunner to the royals and I am sure Groening was influenced when he created Homer. |
