Advantages: Cutting edge cookery!
Disadvantages: Do they really need to eat like that?
To watch the opening credits of this show you would think that we were going to go to a full scale nuclear incident if we do not watch this show....they really ham it up, but then I guess this is what makes it so entertaining....it is light years away from the original format with good old Lloyd Grossman.
We start with six contestants who all have 50 minutes to cook one dish with some ingrediants chosen for them before they start. there is normally an eclectic mix! This then gets down to three contestants and the following day they have two things to do. They have to cook in a pro kitchen, working in a variety of settings from school kitchens to the higher end of the restaurant business. This gets tense and some contestants deal with it much better than others!
They then have an hour to cook two courses of their choice and this is when its great as the cooks get the chance to really show off thier skills. For me, this is the best bit in the episodes as you see some amazingly skilled people and share their emotions with them as they go through the cooking highs and lows.
The judges are great and when you get used to the way they eat (they gulp in the air with every mouthful...infusing the flavours don't you know) you kind of grow very fond of them.
Thursday is always a good night at the end of the weeks heats because we then have the semi finals and the game and stakes are raised even higher (cue more dramatic music, more Guy Ritchie style filming and dramatic views of the potential chefs looking harrassed).
This is good TV and it is easy watching. I recommend it.
Summary: A million miles away from the old Sunday tea time show.
