Advantages: Once in a lifetime
Disadvantages: Might make a prat of yourself
So we were sitting watching Mastermind and I made the mistake of saying this is far too easy now to husband who went very quiet.
Didn't think anything was "up" when he went on the desktop(laptop is MINE all MINE!!) Anyway, some sniggering and then alter "you know how you think Mastermind has got easier?" me "yes why?" "Well I have just entered you for it!!!??"
Didn't think any more of it-thought he was winding me up till about 4 weeks later I got a telephone call from the BBC re Mastermind.
Anyway you have 20 general knowledge questions to answer. You are told that you will not be told your score but that if you are successful you will get another call within the month.
So I did the questions(ARRGH) and was convinced that I was total rubbish(I normally think that to be honest) but was stunned to get a call the next day to answer another 20 questions. These were better for me and I knew that I had answered at least 11 correctly.
So then I was called by a researcher to talk about "my subjects" (You have to supply all three subjects at the beginning) So ALL of my subjects were not acceptable(God knows WHY I couldn't do Level 42)
So then a frantic list of potential subjects. I eventually produced 3 that were ok. They confirm it in writing and tell you the books they will be using. Thank goodness for Amazon!!
So loads of reading and no small amount of praying.
The production staff are fantastic. Really friendly and helpful you can ring at any time and they will go out of their way to help in any way they can.
So we get to recording day. It is recorded at Granada studios in Manchester. You are given a car park pass and you make your way to the studios. Everyone is really nice.
You are shown to the green room where there is loads of drinks hot and cold(no booze but it WAS a day time recording and wouldn't have touched it anyway) LOADS of food both hot meals and snack type food. They also have loads of fruit.
The green room is very comfortable and relaxing. You are talked through what will happen and if you haven't already done so you sign a release form.
Some time later you are taken to wardrobe where they look at your outfit and second outfit(you are asked to take a spare) that sorted you then are taken to make up (B-L-I-S-S) it is fantastic and again very friendly.
You are then taken back to the green room shortly after you go to the studio. You go into the studio through large heavy doors. It is all black. There are heavy curtains and although you cannot see anything you can clearly hear everything that is going on.
The warm up act on that day was Ted Robbins who was doing a great job. You are then "miked up" and told which seat you will be sitting in.
Shortly after Ted Robbins announces you and then out you go. I can honestly can say I had a great time and the recording flew by.
John Humphries was pleasant but has no contact whatsoever with the contestants apart from the actual recording. Then its all over (after the bits you have to re record) and you are back in the green room.
Yet more food has been served up(they record four heats per day) and everyone has a relaxing meal. There is now wine and beer as the night recordings are shortly to be filmed.
Ted Robbins came in for his dinner and was very nice and friendly to everybody.
All in all I had a really nice day, a day I will remember for ever.
Why did I do it? Well I figure you are a long time dead and I am sick of always being sensible and taking the safe route. I decided that no one really remembers who was on Mastermind so why not.
I would strongly advise anyone who is thinking they may like to have a try to get in there and DO IT......Why the hell not.
So I am now waiting for my appearance with a mixture of excitment fear and dread but what the hell its only half an hour isn't it??
And NO I am NOT telling you when it is on.....I am not THAT confident after all.
Summary: Great show. Day to remember.
